Undertrails Extort Rs 15 lakh from Inmates in Jail

Mangaluru: “Nine accused including 5 under-trails have extorted Rs 15 lakh from the other three inmates who were arrested in a fraud case at the Sub jail. Sijo K Jose, Sunil and Jerry Paul arrested in December 2017 are in Judicial custody for illegally diverting Rs 55 crores from Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd (KRIDL). The above accused are in judicial custody till January 2018. In the sub-jail, the undertrials i.e Mithun Poojary, Tilakraj, Shivaraj, Raju alias Rajesh and Nikhil threatened Sijo, Sunil and Jerry Paul with life and extorted Rs 15 lakh from them”, said the Police commissioner T R Suresh in a press meet held at his office here on January 24.

Addressing the mediapersons Police Commissioner T R Suresh said, “The undertrial Mithun Poojary who was in judicial custody and other four of the accused assaulted Sijo, Sunil and Jerry Paul and threatened them with life if they failed to pay Rs 15 lakh. To collect the money the undertrials took the help of Anoop Kumar from Jokatte, Manoj Kulal alias Kodikere Manoj from Jokatte and Charan from Kulai. The accused transferred Rs 2 lakh to Charan’s account. The transferred amount was shared by the accused who purchased gold and for other needs. Later the accused forced the family members to remit rest of the amount to the bank.”

Police commissioner further said, “The undertrials also threatened and forced to transfer a Nissan Terrano car belonging to Sunil to Anoop Kumar’s name. In this connection, Paul alias Appaji filed a complaint in the Barke police station. Already five of them are in the jail, the remaining accused Charan, Anoop Kumar and Manoj Kulal alias Kodikere Manoj have to be arrested. We have information that more people are involved in this case, we will take action against them too.”

DCP Law and order Hanumantharaya and DCP Crime and Traffic Uma Prashanth were also present.
