Mangaluru: Talk about magic that issues highlighted in Mangalorean.com are getting rectified in no time, and that too within hours recently. So, once again Mangalorean.com has proved one more positive result after highlighting another civic issue -Talk about the power of media, especially Electronic media where we highlight the civic issues and within few hours or couple of days the concerned authorities who can’t bear the criticism about their negligence, quickly get into action and rectify the civic issues. In the past Mangalorean.com has highlighted various civic issues through our website, and there has been a tremendous effect with most of the problems being fixed in no time, from rectifying dilapidated roads, open drainage, non-friendly footpaths, dog menace, neglected garbage, illegal hoardings, pot holes, dying trees etc.

On Sunday, 30 June Team Mangalorean had highlighted a civic issue through an article “What’s That Smell? It’s the Drainage Water Flowing in Heart of City since a Week”, where citizens and business owners in the Hampankatta area, from Catholic Club to Taj Mahal restaurant area have been facing severe trouble and inconvenience due to the flow of drainage water on to the road and water logging since several days. The water was getting stagnated and most of it is stranded near the auto-rickshaw stand right in front of Taj Mahal restaurant. Speaking to Team Mangalorean, nearby business owners said some days the smell is unbearable, and few people living nearby have gone to extreme measures to escape the stink. Even pedestrians had experienced the bad smell, but with no other option had to pass by the stinky overflowing drainage water.

But good news is that with less than 24 hours after we published the report, the Mangaluru City Corporation crew along with couple of engineers were at the location by this morning. But in this case, we can’t blame the MCC, because it was due to the ignorance of the people who live around or work or go to college in and around Light House Hill road and Catholic Club-Hampankatta area. You know why, this is what the MCC engineer had to say, “We were surprise to find a bunch load of sanitary pads, Condoms, tiny plastic water bottles, food wrappers, vegetable waste, empty cigarette packs, among many other items- which had totally blocked the sewage pipe. It’s sad to note that educated people can do such a thing”.

” Since this drainage pipe is quite old, probably three-four decades old, and not being broad enough to handle such a large amount of drain water, since a bunch of apartments, hotels and education institutions exist on the Light House Hill road and in the nearby vicinity. Another fault with the drainage pipe is that it had the opening for the flow in a wrong direction, and so with a large amount of drain water flowing into the pipe, plus unwanted garbage had choked the pipe- and all that drain water assembles inside a drainage area located inside Catholic Club premises got overflowed and drained along the sides of the road stretch from Catholic Club towards Hampankatta circle area. We will do our best to work and rectify the problem by this evening, or if not by tomorrow, since we have to be careful while digging since a bunch of utility cables are buried underneath” added the MCC engineer..

For over a week, the civic body’s apathy and lackadaisical attitude in rectifying this problem has many angry, and even after complaints made, no one has taken any action, say nearby residents. But now these people should be happy, that finally the MCC has taken action, and the problem will be rectified soon. “Better late than never” as they say, the report highlighting the issue published in Mangalorean.com did awake the concerned authorities at MCC to take action. On a final thought, when the MCC engineer was asked by yours truly, how did MCC come to know about this stinky drainage water flowing issue, he replied saying, “There was a report in a website highlighting this issue, which was forwarded to us, so we have taken the action appropriately and quickly”. Oops..But I didn’t tell the MCC man, that the report was highlighted by me in the website that he was talking about??
