‘Western Attire Got Women Molested’ – Remarks by HM Senseless

Mangaluru: ‘Women molested on New Year eve, Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara blames ‘Western Ways’- Bah hambug! Calling all you ladies in Karnataka, next time you head out for an open air party during Christmas and New Year, please make sure you wear clothes like how Kannadigas do – like Saree, long skirt or Churidhar- keep all your tight fit jeans, mini skirts or any other Western clothing at home- because chances are you may get molested or raped, as it seems like according to Home Minister’s senseless, baseless and disgusting remarks.

Recalling the incident, New Year revelry turned into a nightmare for several women who were allegedly molested despite huge police presence at a large gathering in Bengaluru city’s downtown region (MG Road, Brigade Rd, Residency Rd), drawing widespread outrage even as the state Home minister stoked a controversy by blaming the youngsters’ “Western Ways” for the incidents. Eyewitness accounts suggest that women were molested and groped and lewd remarks were also passed by miscreants late night on December 31 in the posh area even as it was claimed that 1,500 police personnel had been deployed to control the crowds. Instead of condemning the unruly incident created by some hooligans, Home Minister has supported their act by saying, that it was the ladies western attire that gave scope for these beastly type men to pounce on them and molest them.

As per eye witness, all hell broke loose close to midnight as hooligans in the garb of revelers started pawing, molesting and passing lewd remarks on women on the streets, forcing some of them to literally take off their stilettoes and run for help. None of these (police) arrangements were of any help to the women who became easy targets for drunk hooligans. Badly outnumbered on the streets in the middle of thousands of revelers, the cops had no option but to take a backseat and intervene intermittently depending on the ‘gravity’ of the situation,

Home Minister G Parameshwara had said “It is not good. Definitely we will look into it and see that it is not repeated. Unfortunately, what is happening is as I said, days like new year Brigade Road, Commercial Street, M G Road, large number of youngsters gather. Youngsters who are almost like westerners, they try to copy the westerners not only in the mindset, but even the dressing. They should dress like Kannadigas to avoid all these controversies”

These worthless remarks by Home Minister is worst than MP Nalin Kateel’s ‘Setting DK on fire’statement- which got a befitting response from Congress honchos and party men. I guess now it’s the turn of BJP members to retaliate against rubbish comments by Parameshwar on ladies attire. All this time I thought only a person like Mulayam was giving statements like ‘Rapes do happen, after all they are boys’, but Parameshwara’s statement is a further step forward of Mulayam’s statement. Holy Molly! Our leaders should think twice before they open their dirty mouths, spitting out venom of controversy. Yesterday it was Congress who wants MP Nalin Kateel to be sacked, and today BJP wants HM Parameshwara to be sacked- What a crazy world are we in?

I have a question for HM Parameshwara- Sir, if you think that Western Outfits create scope for molestation or rape, then how about women wearing the very traditional saree way-way below the belly button, together with a mini blouse showing most of a woman’s upper flesh – don’t you think there are chances they could also get molested or raped? Any answers for this query please? So what is in HM’s mind is that it’s okay to rape or molest a woman if she is wearing Western outfit. But we have seen and heard women that were clad in Indian dresses been raped, molested and even murdered?

The minister’s remarks drew an angry response from the NCW chairperson who demanded the Home Minister should resign and apologise to the women of the country for making such remarks. I fully admire and support National Commission for Women chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam for coming down heavily on the police and slamming home minister G Parameshwara’s remarks, demanding that he should resign. The NCW as well as the Karnataka State Commission for Women have also sought separate reports from administration and police over the incidents. It is learnt that while women without any male companions had to seek protection from women police personnel, who were very few in number on the spot, men who had come with female friends had a tough time protecting them, according to eyewitnesses.

In conclusion, such remarks from the Home Minister are unacceptable and regrettable. We need to ask this Minister whether Indian men so pathetic and weak that when they see a woman in western clothes on a day of revelry, they get out of control? When will the Indian men learn to respect women. The Minister should apologise to the women of the country or resign or face the consequences from the opposition party and NCW members. Period!
