Widespread rain forecast across Tamil Nadu till August 17

Chennai: Widespread rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu until August 17, with several districts likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said on Thursday.

The prevailing wet spell is being attributed to a weak low-level atmospheric circulation over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. The weather system is expected to create favourable conditions for rain in different parts of the State during the next few days.

According to the forecast, isolated places in the Western Ghats districts are likely to receive light to moderate rain on Thursday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds may accompany the showers in some areas.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense lightning and avoid taking shelter beneath trees or near exposed structures.

Rainfall activity is expected to extend to more districts on Friday, August 14. One or two places in the Western Ghats region, as well as Madurai, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Villupuram, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts, may receive moderate rain, the weather office said.

The forecast indicates that the rain may not be continuous or uniform across the State. Instead, short and localised spells are likely, with conditions varying from one district to another. Some areas could remain dry even as nearby locations experience thunderstorms.

Chennai is also likely to witness a change in weather later on Thursday. Parts of the city may receive moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning during the evening or night. Cloudy conditions could develop towards the latter part of the day before showers begin in isolated neighbourhoods.

People travelling during the evening have been urged to remain alert, as sudden rain could reduce visibility and lead to water accumulation on low-lying roads. Motorists should exercise caution during thunderstorms and strong winds.

The continued rainfall is expected to provide some relief from humid weather in many areas. However, the possibility of lightning and gusty winds remains a concern, particularly in the hill districts and exposed coastal stretches.

The Regional Meteorological Centre will continue to monitor the atmospheric circulation and issue district-level updates if the system strengthens.
