With Love from Dept of Labor to Laborers! Hand Sanitizers/Soaps/Face Masks Distributed among Labour Class

Mangaluru: The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases in India has gone 114 plus, according to the health ministry. Covid-19, which has globally infected over 1.5 lakh people, is likely to cause more shutdowns across the country as more states rush to stop the virus from spreading. While 13 people who were infected by the virus have recovered in India, the global situation still paints a grim picture. The death toll due to new coronavirus has shot up sharply in Italy, which has now become the country worst affected by the virus outbreak after China. Iran, too, faces heightened risk as total death toll in the country has crossed 700 while there are close to 14,000 confirmed cases. Besides taking precautions to prevent the spread of the virus domestically, India is also actively rescuing its nationals stuck in the high-affected zone.

And locally here in Dakshina Kannada, including Mangaluru the State Government is doing all it can to bring awareness on Coronavirus/Covid-19, and issuing guidelines of social distancing while in public and moving around. Among the many other departments of the state government which are working hard to bring awareness among the public on this pandemic, even the State department of labour has come forward to spread the awareness on Coronavirus among the labour class, especially at the various construction sites in every talukk of DK, including Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal, Belthangady and Mangaluru.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Ms Wilma Elizabeth Tauro, the Labour Officer from the Dept of Labour Office, located on Kadri Road in the City said, “We have started this awareness campaign from 24 March and will go until 31 March 2020. Daily we travel to every taluk in DK, namely Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia, Belthangady and Mangaluru in our six vans, each van carrying three persons-one staff from the labour dept and Red Cross each, and the driver. Throughout this campaign we will be distributing nearly 4000 hand sanitizers and Lifebuoy soaps, mainly to the labourers at the construction sites, and other low wage class workers”.

“Since we have tied up with CREDAI, under the presidentship of Navven Cardoza, they help us in finding the location of the construction sites, where we distribute the hand sanitizers and soaps, and also demonstrate the techniques of hand wash, and brief them about the coronavirus disease. CREDAI has also been kind enough in providing ration, and daily meals, sponsored by the builders and contractors. In Mangaluru we have already visited nearly 50 sites, and we have got response and cooperation from the labourers, who want to keep themselves safe from this disease. Our main aim is to spread the word on Coronavirus and its consequences, and to keep these labour class community safe and healthy” added Ms Tauro. Also Amarendra -the labour officer from the Sub Division-2 Mangaluru of Dept of Labour was also present during our conversation.
