With motto ‘Lead by Example’ the First Student Council of Fr Muller College of Allied Health Sciences Inaugurated

Mangaluru: Quoting M D Arnold-“A Good Leader Leads The People From Above Them. A Great Leader Leads The People From Within Them”- Serving as a President of Students’ Council in a college is a privilege and honor bestowed upon you by fellow college mates. When you are selected, your buddies have recognized your leadership skills and potential to manage the Council effectively. Your tenure will offer many opportunities to learn new skills, enhance the experience of others and grow as a leader. By taking advantage of the many opportunities to learn and grow, your term can have personal and professional development benefits that will last a lifetime. All of the members of your Student Council are part of your team, and it is the President’s responsibility to guide members toward reaching the Council goals.

Having goals and making plans to achieve them are two key steps to being successful. Every Council members has his/her important role to fill, and by working together, your Council will be able to meet its full potential and serve a vital role in your College, may be even, community. To accommodate these facts, there is a great deal of latitude in how you choose to manage your Council as long as you follow the basic Council rules/standards. In today’s rapidly changing world, individuals must blend their family demands, work commitments and volunteer work. While the responsibilities of an individual association president/chairman may be demanding, he/she is able to share challenges, ideas and perspectives with fellow members.

Leadership is always good and better, and it was time for the First launching of the Students’ Council of Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences (AHS) 2019-20, which took place on Monday, 9 December 2019 at the Decennial Hall at 3.30 pm. The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song rendered by the students of AHS, followed by welcome address by Dr Padmaja Uday Kumar- Vice Dean of FMMC. Fr Ajith Menezes- Administrator of FMMC, who was instrumental in having this separate Students Council for AHS, introduced the newly formed student council of 2019-2020, and Fr Richard Coelho- the Director FMCI handed over the files as a symbolic representation of the Student Council members responsibilities.

The new Student Council members of AHS for 2019-20 are- Ms Keziah Pinto-President; Ms Anvitha Ferros- General secretary; Ms Sweedal Jennica Sequeira-Sports Committee representative; Ms Sheik Asifa Parveen- Cultural Committee Rep; Ms K Jonicajohny- Magazine Committee Rep; Lanville J Sequeira- Media Committee Rep; and Ms Annie Benny Mathew- Fine arts Rep.

Dr Padmaja U Kumar then administered the Oath to the Student Council members, who repeated after her raising their right hand forward, which was followed by singing of the Institution anthem. The Chief guest of the occasion, Dr Rita Crasta, Assistant Professor, Dept of PG Studies at St Aloysius College, Mangaluru presented the SC members with their respective name badges. In her inaugural address, Dr Rita Crasta said, “If your actions inspire others – to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”-is a famous saying by – John Adams. You all have joined this institution to serve the people in the society. There are people in front of you, from whom you can learn. Learn from others, which is a fastest way of learning. You can see in the society there are great leaders like late A P J Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, Baba Amte a social worker etc… You can listen to their speeches or you can read about them so that you can become a great leader”

” You all, already leaders of the community as part of this prestigious institute. Fr. Muller Charitable institution is a historical name in the field of medicine. To succeed in life there are three key points- Strategy, Execution, and Risk Management. The first thing that everybody should thrive – is a goal or a purpose and a plan to reach the goal. Few of the necessary qualities are honesty, integrity, confidence and humility. History is made by those who make their own path. You need to take your plan to action. It is not an easy job to make a dream true. Try to overcome hurdles if you come across. A risk or a failure cannot break you. It should give you more strength to find a new way. Every step you take, teaches you a lesson and that lessons leads you, to the next chapter of your life. Today’s leaders did not reach their position without crossing these hurdles. Leaders should have an ability to lead the people, leading by examples, showing people what to do? This should be the attitude of a leader. The leader has to understand first and do first so that he or she can assist others. Leader means not only smart but they should have the ability to inspire people and the people do their own. Bring out the skills and you can make them work to their ability. A good leader has a futuristic vision and knows how to turn his ideas into real-world success stories” added Dr Rita Crasta.

The new Student Council President Ms Keziah Pinto in her maiden speech said “Today is indeed a very special day for all of us , and I’m so grateful that this day has finally come. The day when we AHS officials begin our very own council..the first one ever. Thanks to the management who believed in us and decided that it was necessary to give us a platform to put forth our ideas develop our leadership skills and to work towards the holistic growth of the entire AHS. Today we stand on this stage not representing ourselves but the entire AHS and all the talents that have been hidden all this while. Our path is not easy but is definitely possible. We may stumble we may fall down, we may make mistakes. Some good some bad. But let’s not forget to get up and persevere in what we are doing . It’s only then that we will see achievement..just like how after every storm there is a rainbow”.

” Not everyone is blessed with a silver spoon. But every one is blessed with our own talent s .And fulfilling and transforming the raw ore into polished jewels is in our hands. So let’s all begin to think and believe we are all blessed with the silver spoon and that this is our golden opportunity to strive to use our talents like jewels. That together as a family we will work together to take AHS to greater heights. Being a basketball player, one thing that I realized was that – every individual in the team is important.everyone has an crucial role to play ..and although the role may be different ,the absence of one will make a huge difference. We are each others strengths. In the same way each and everyone of you is important in this journey of ours and the absence of of even one would be a great loss. Let us be confident of who we are and participate with full zeal in every activity so that we grow as complete individuals. Our council decided that since we are the pioneers of this impelling adventure we are going to keep our motto simple ” Lead by example”. It’s a give and take relationship.you have us we have you..and the management has all of us” concluded Ms Pinto.

In His presidential address Fr Richard Coelho on a lighter side vein started his speech saying, “Listening to SC President Ms Keziah Pinto’s her First speech was like listening to India’s First PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s first speech to the nation. Happy to note that AHS has their own student council. Education shouldn’t end when you exit out of here, but is should last forever. Failures may come in your way, but don’t get depressed, upset or take a extreme step, instead overcome the hurdles, and carry on with your life looking towards success. Remember, Vision, Goal, and Determination will take you to greater heights and success. Always try to work in unity without discrimination or hate, because we are all equally created by God. Irrespective of how you define a leader, he or she can prove to be a difference maker between success and failure. A good leader should have Honesty and Integrity, Inspire Others, have Commitment and Passion, a Good Communicator, Decision-Making Capabilities, Accountability, Delegation and Empowerment, Creativity and Innovation, among other qualities. I wish the students council members all success in their endeavours and decision making strategy”

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Anvitha Ferros, and the programme was compered by Ms Inish Alvia Menezes and Ms Lolita Lobo, students of AHS. Fr Rudolph Ravi D’sa-Administrator-FMMCH, Dr Jayaprakash Alva-Dean of FMMC; Dr Derrick Lobo- FMCI Governing Board member, among others graced the occasion. In conclusion, the energy, the faith, the devotion, the commitment which you bring to this endeavour will light your institution and all who serve it… and the glow from that light can truly light this nation. Best of luck from Team Mangalorean to the Students Council of AHS 2019-20 of FMMC. I end this column with a inspiring prayer to all the Students’ Council members through God’s blessings to become great Magis {Latin word for ‘More’ and ‘Greater’} driven leaders :

“God of Love and Life, You have called these young students together as Servants to do your Will, Grant them the light of Your Spirit, to Guide them in their responsibilities as a Student Council representative. May they work together in harmony for the common good. May they listen to one another in a spirit of genuine respect. May they encourage and reverence one another’s unique talents. May they use the gifts of the Spirit in creative love driven leadership. May they approach the decision making through discernment and prayer. May they respond effectively to the needs of the student body in their care. May Your blessings radiate from us to others in anew spirit of service. We make these prayers in God’s name, the Light of the World. May God bless us all”
