Woman Who Jumped into Kumaradhara River Rescued After Crocodile Attack Near Kukke Subrahmanya

Mangaluru: In an unusual turn of events, a woman who allegedly jumped into the Kumaradhara River near the Kumaradhara Bridge at Kukke Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district in an apparent suicide attempt was rescued after a crocodile bit her, prompting her to scream for help. The incident occurred late on the night of November 4.

The woman, a native of Udupi, reportedly jumped into the river from the bridge after becoming distressed over family-related issues.
Soon after she entered the water, a crocodile reportedly bit her. Terrified by the sudden attack and the pain, the woman began screaming for help from the middle of the river.

Hearing her cries, staff members of a nearby lodge and local residents rushed towards the riverbank with torches to locate her. The crocodile reportedly released the woman and swam away, apparently startled by her continuous screams and the arrival of people at the scene.

The alert locals immediately sprang into action, managed to bring the woman safely out of the water, and helped her reach the riverbank.

In what locals described as an extraordinary turn of events, the crocodile attack drew attention to the woman’s plight and led to her rescue. They observed that, had she not screamed following the attack, she might not have been noticed in time.

The locals immediately informed the Subrahmanya Police, who arrived at the scene and questioned the woman. During the inquiry, she reportedly told the police that she had travelled from Udupi to Kukke Subrahmanya and jumped into the river after becoming distressed over minor family disputes.

The police subsequently contacted her family members in Udupi and asked them to come to Subrahmanya. After providing appropriate counselling to the woman and her family, the police safely sent her back to Udupi along with her relatives.
