Workers Act of Ignorance! They Dig, Cut the Pipe, and Leave  Water Flow for Hours

Mangaluru: One thing for sure, that you’ll all agree with me is that-Digging of roads/streets/bye-lanes will never stop in Mangaluru no matter what- and we have seen it and will see in future too. Without proper planning, new roads are constructed, and after a while, the new roads are dug to lay cables-or expand the road etc. Absolutely no proper planning- every new work undertaken by Mangaluru city corporation has to be done twice, thrice or…??

A few weeks ago MCC had announced that it has yet to collect payment of water bills in crores – and on the other hand, MCC is losing gallons of water due to shoddy work and carelessness of workers during cutting the road or during drainage work. While most of the City is dying of thirst due to low water supply during summer times, and here we have water being lost due to human error and negligence. Water leaks are becoming a bigger cause for concern with corporations/municipalities desperately trying to conserve more water while trying to decrease the amount of clean water that is being wasted through burst water pipes.

The latest incident of precious WATER being lost/wasted due to workers ignorance is happened near More grocery store, opposite to St Agnes College-Mangaluru, where from this morning (30 October) onwards workers (not sure if these workers are of MCC or other utility companies), have dug up the road, creating inconveniences for the pedestrians- but above all, their carelessness led to a water pipe being cut while digging- and these workers didn’t have the slightest courtesy of fixing the broken pipe, thereby preventing wastage of water.

Team Mangalorean passing by this site at 6:20 pm, couldn’t resist in making a phone call to the area Corporator Sabitha Misquith, and explained the details of the shoddy job done by the so-called “Ignorant Workers”. The Corporator assured that she will contact someone from the department and try to fix the problem at the earliest. Looking at the dug up site, it looks like the water has been flowing since hours after the pipe was cut. Only a person with no common sense would leave a broken water pipe, resulting in losing lots of water, and walk away after their work is done. Bah humbug?

Thanks to Corporator Sabitha Misquith, who acted fast and arrange someone to fix the problem – and at 6.45 pm the water leakage has stopped. But no matter what, MCC should talk to these workers tomorrow, and warn them of strict action if they do such a careless job next time.

Faulty/Leaky Water Pipe Fixed by MCC Leaking Again within 2 weeks?

Mangaluru: On 5 October Team Mangalorean had published a report “https://www.mangalorean.com/mcc-negligence-gallons-of-water-lost-due-to-faultyleaky-pipe-near-kadri/” in Mangalorean.com, and by 6th October evening the leaky/faulty water pipe was fixed by the MCC officials along with their workers. Team Mangalorean had forwarded the report to MCC Mayor Kavitha Sanil, and also concerned MCC Officials, for their quick action- and they took quick action in fixing the issue. Thanking Mayor, Kadri Area Ward Corporator Ashok Kumar DK, and other MCC Officials who were responsible to fix this civic issue, Team Mangalorean had published an article: Website Impact! MCC Fixes Faulty/leaky water pipe within 24 hours (Ref: https://www.mangalorean.com/website-impact-mcc-fixes-faultyleaky-water-pipe-within-24-hours/)

Even few of our readers had commented about this report on their facebook- like Dr Edmond Fernandes posted his comment saying, “When Karnataka is facing drought, we cannot afford such costly mistakes wasting water. About time the City Corporation is held accountable to the people. I hope Mangaloreans also rise up to participate actively in governance processes”. Shalini Shetty posted her comments saying, ” Hoping this report would awaken our city officials to act quickly, so that no more water is lost, which is precious when many people don’t have access to clean drinking water. Hope to see positive results soon from the Mayor and her team”.

But to the residents surprise, the fixed leaky pipe has started to leak again- and this not new- This has been a long time problem, where after complaints the concerned people come and do an incomplete job- and a few days later it’s once again, the same problem of water leakage. And recently one was much worse, with water oozing out continuously, and overflowing surrounding areas. But it was fixed- but not right- it’s leaking and water is wasted once again.

Old water infrastructure has been a problem for MCC with old metal pipes rusting, loose bolts giving way, and clean water gushing onto the street or into drains, costing a fortune in revenue. So how much water does the city actually lose because of this? A LOT! If you examine some of the MCC water connection pipes you will notice some shocking results- most pipes in the distribution system in a bad condition. The pipes are either leaking and the dead ends capped with wooden/metal corks increasing the likelihood of water-borne diseases. Presence of heavy metals like iron and lead corroding from the pipes and joints could far exceed limits of safe drinking water. Sadly, MCC doesn’t care about citizens health safety.

Hope this report will once again get the MCC officials to the spot, and at least this time fix this faulty/leaking water pipe once for all, without any more leakage issues in the nearest future. Hope so- until then let’s keep our fingers crossed?
