World Day of the Poor Commemorated at St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu
Mangaluru: St. Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu, a prominent charitable organization under the aegis of the Diocese of Mangalore, solemnly observed the World Day of the Poor with a program encompassing prayer, communal fellowship, and a cultural exhibition. The event underscored the Church’s unwavering dedication to preserving the dignity of impoverished and marginalized individuals.
The day commenced with a Thanksgiving Holy Mass celebrated in the institute’s various chapels. Rev. Fr. J. B. Crasta, the Director, officiated alongside Rev. Fr. Gilbert D’Souza, Rev. Fr. Nelson Oliver, and Rev. Fr. Vivian Rodriguez. The Eucharistic service served as an expression of gratitude for divine blessings bestowed upon the benefactors, residents, collaborators, and caregivers who collectively support the Ashram’s mission.
Subsequent to the Holy Mass, a cultural gathering was organized specifically for the residents of St Anthony’s Poor Home. Rev. Fr. J. B. Crasta presided over the program, with Rev. Fr. Praveen Martis serving as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Rev. Fr. J. B. Crasta emphasized the inherent value of the poor in the eyes of God. He reminded those present that the Sacred Scripture consistently illuminates the struggles, faith, and dignity of the impoverished. He further asserted that St Anthony’s Poor Home stands as a tangible manifestation of God’s compassion, providing essential care, shelter, and hope to the needy and abandoned – a vital ministry of the Diocese effectively executed through the Ashram.
The residents actively engaged in a range of competitions and cultural performances, showcasing their diverse talents and abilities. Students from St Anthony’s Institutions contributed significantly to the celebration through their support and participation. A graceful welcome dance by Ashine established a joyful and welcoming atmosphere at the commencement of the event.
Rev. Fr. Vivian Rodriguez adeptly served as the program’s compere, while also delivering both the welcome address and the vote of thanks. He expressed profound gratitude to all those who contributed to the celebration’s success.
The event culminated in a renewed emphasis on the Christian calling to compassion, solidarity, and dedicated service. Reflecting the overarching theme of the day, the celebration reinforced the message that “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord” (Proverbs 19:17), and affirmed that service rendered to the poor is, in essence, service rendered to Christ Himself.
