World No Tobacco Day 2026: A Comprehensive Effort to Combat Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction at A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences

Mangalore: Department of Public Health Dentistry at A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences spearheaded a multi-faceted observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, centering its efforts on the poignant theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.” The initiative encompassed a broad spectrum of tobacco control activities, demonstrating a resolute commitment to public health and the well-being of the community.

The campaign commenced with a robust digital outreach, as students from A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences actively engaged in an anti-tobacco campaign across various social media platforms. This strategic utilization of digital channels aimed to disseminate crucial information and raise awareness among a wider, digitally-native audience, fostering a proactive stance against tobacco consumption.

A significant component of the observance involved direct engagement with the youth, recognizing their vulnerability to tobacco initiation. An impactful anti-tobacco awareness program was meticulously organized for the students of Government PU College, Gandhinagar, Kavoor. During this program, students were educated on the detrimental effects of tobacco use, culminating in a collective pledge to abstain from tobacco, thereby fostering a generation committed to a tobacco-free lifestyle.

Further amplifying their commitment to public health, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, in a collaborative endeavor with the Rotary Club and KSRTC, extended its tobacco control activities to the public sphere. The bustling KSRTC Bus Stand in Mangalore served as a key venue for these interventions. A dynamic flash mob performance, followed by a poignant role play enacted by the students of A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences vividly depicted the severe ill effects associated with tobacco consumption. These creative and engaging presentations aimed to captivate commuters’ attention and impart crucial health messages memorably.

A significant highlight of the event at the KSRTC Bus Stand was the launch of the “Spit Free Mangalore Signature Campaign.” This initiative sought public support and commitment toward maintaining a clean and tobacco-free environment, particularly in public spaces. The event was graced by Ms. Preetha, Depot Manager – KSRTC, who served as the Chief Guest, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in public health initiatives. Faculty members from the Department of Public Health Dentistry, A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences, alongside esteemed office bearers from the Rotary Club, were also in attendance, further solidifying the multi-organizational commitment to this vital cause.

The comprehensive array of activities undertaken for World No Tobacco Day 2026 by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, A. J. Institute of Dental Sciences, in collaboration with its partners, reflects a profound dedication to combating nicotine and tobacco addiction. By targeting diverse demographics through innovative and impactful strategies, the initiative has undoubtedly contributed significantly to unmasking the allure of tobacco and empowering individuals to make informed, healthy choices for a brighter, tobacco-free future.
