Young Child Successfully Undergoes Novel Thyroid Cancer Surgery at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital
Mangalore: A 7-year-old child has successfully undergone a complex surgical procedure at Zulekha Yenepoya Institute of Oncology, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, after being diagnosed with an advanced case of thyroid cancer. The child, diagnosed with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland with significant spread to both sides and the central part of the neck, has demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout the ordeal.
The child’s parents initially sought medical attention after noticing a swelling in her neck. Subsequent testing confirmed the diagnosis, prompting swift action from the hospital’s medical team. Following deliberation within the Tumour Board, a surgical oncology team led by Dr. Jalaluddin Akbar, including Dr. H T Amar Rao, and Dr. Noor Mohammed, along with anesthetist Dr. Preethi, performed the intricate operation.
The nine-hour surgery involved the removal of the thyroid gland and affected lymph nodes from both sides and the central region of the neck. Given the extensive spread of the cancer in a young patient, the procedure was deemed high-risk and exceptionally complicated. Notably, the surgical team employed a novel technique utilizing Indocyanine Green (ICG) to identify and meticulously preserve the parathyroid glands. This innovative approach, used for the first time in Mangalore, aims to ensure the patient’s long-term well-being and minimize potential postoperative complications. Pediatricians Dr. Anitha Prabhu and Dr. Ramnath Mahale provided specialized care for the child throughout the treatment process.
The surgery, performed a week prior, was deemed a success and the young patient is reportedly recovering well.
This case underscores the critical importance of early detection and prompt intervention in the management of thyroid cancer, particularly in pediatric cases. While thyroid cancer remains a rare occurrence in children, increased awareness and timely medical consultation upon the presentation of early symptoms are crucial for identifying potential issues. Collaboration between the medical community and parents is paramount in promoting awareness of thyroid health and the necessity of seeking immediate medical attention if any unusual symptoms manifest.
The patient’s family has expressed profound gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the medical professionals at Zulekha Yenepoya Institute of Oncology. With continued medical support and follow-up care, the child is expected to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Her courageous battle inspires and emphasizes the significance of hope, resilience, and access to high-quality medical care.
