Youth Declared Brain-Dead After Road Accident; Family Pledges Organ Donation

Mangaluru: A 21-year-old youth who sustained critical head injuries in a bike-scooter collision near the Koragajja Adi Kshetra in Kuttar, Ullal, on Monday night has been declared brain-dead. Following medical advice, his family decided to donate his organs.

The deceased has been identified as Varshit Kullal (21), younger son of Gopal and Vedavathi, residents of Ayerabettu, Kuttar.

Varshit was riding his bike towards his home from Kuttar at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday. His bike collided head-on with a scooter travelling from Ranipura towards Kuttar. The accident occurred in front of Durga Auto Works near the Koragajja Adi Kshetra in Kuttar.

Due to the impact, Varshit was thrown from the bike and sustained severe head injuries. He was immediately shifted to Yenepoya Hospital in Deralakatte, where he was undergoing treatment. However, despite medical efforts, doctors declared him brain-dead on Tuesday.

Following the doctors’ advice, Varshit’s parents decided to donate their son’s organs. Hospital sources said requests have already been received for his kidneys, liver, heart and lungs. The organs are expected to be transported to the respective hospitals through a ‘zero-traffic’ green corridor arrangement.

The scooter rider, Dheeraj, also sustained serious injuries in the accident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Varshit was unmarried and reportedly working in fabrication. He is survived by his parents and an elder brother.

Mangaluru South Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
