Digital Society Day: From Letters and Landlines to Smartphones — How Communication Has Changed Our Lives

I often look back fondly on the days when receiving a letter was a special moment in our family. During my childhood, we eagerly waited for the postman. Whenever a letter arrived, it brought happiness, excitement, and curiosity. Sometimes, letters written in English were read aloud or explained to other family members. We waited patiently for replies, and every letter carried news, affection and a sense of connection. Those memories remain close to my heart.

The arrival of the landline telephone transformed how we communicated. We could speak directly to relatives and friends living far away instead of waiting for letters to arrive. Later, mobile phones made communication more convenient, and smartphones brought about a revolutionary change. Today, we can send messages, share photographs, and make video calls within seconds. Distance is no longer the barrier it once was.

India’s digital transformation has been remarkable. According to a published report, India leads the world in mobile data consumption, and the number of 5G subscriptions is projected to exceed 110 crore by 2031. This forecast highlights the growing importance of digital connectivity in our daily lives. Smartphones now support education, business, banking, shopping and access to public services. For students, families and small business owners, digital technology has opened up numerous opportunities.

However, progress also brings responsibilities. Cyber fraud, misinformation, privacy risks and excessive smartphone use are growing concerns. We must learn to use digital services safely and responsibly. Children need guidance, older people may require assistance, and everyone must exercise caution when sharing personal information online.

I sometimes feel nostalgic about the days when we waited for letters and listened attentively as family news was read aloud. Today, we may exchange countless messages yet miss out on meaningful conversations with the people sitting right beside us. Technology has made communication faster, but speed alone cannot measure the quality of our relationships.

I believe we should welcome digital progress without forgetting the values of the past. A handwritten letter, a telephone call and a smartphone message are different ways of expressing care and affection. What matters most is the feeling behind them.

As India moves towards an increasingly connected future, we must use technology to bring people closer, share knowledge and improve lives while preserving kindness, patience and genuine human relationships. India is making remarkable strides in digital development and emerging as a global leader in several areas of digital connectivity. At the same time, we must use these advancements wisely and cautiously, ensuring that technology remains a tool for progress rather than a substitute for human connection.
