Diocese of Mangalore Condemns Disparaging Comments Against Pope Leo XIV

Mangaluru: The Diocese of Mangalore has issued a strong statement condemning recent disparaging comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump against His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The statement, released today by Public Relations Officers Fr. J.B. Saldanha and Roy Castelino on behalf of the clergy, religious, and faithful of the Diocese, express deep concern and disappointment over the remarks.

“The Diocese of Mangalore strongly condemns the recent disparaging comments made by the U.S. President, Mr. Donald Trump, against His Holiness Pope Leo XIV,” the statement declares. It emphasizes that such remarks directed at the Supreme Pontiff deeply hurt Catholics, who revere the Holy Father as the successor of St. Peter and the visible head of the Church. The Diocese asserts that insulting the Pope is tantamount to disrespecting the faith and sentiments of millions of the faithful worldwide.

The statement acknowledges the importance of healthy debate on public issues as a cornerstone of democracy. However, it firmly maintains that personal attacks on religious leaders have no place in civil discourse. Such attacks, the Diocese argues, undermine mutual respect, wound interfaith harmony, and diminish the dignity of public life.
“We call upon all leaders and persons of influence to uphold decorum and refrain from speech that demeans the religious convictions of others,” the statement urges. The Diocese of Mangalore reaffirms its unwavering loyalty to Pope Leo XIV and expresses its fervent hope that his ministry of peace, justice, and care for the poor will continue to inspire the world.

In closing, the Diocese calls upon the faithful to respond to these troubling moments with prayer, both for the Holy Father and for all those in positions of authority. The intention behind these prayers is that leaders may be guided by truth and respect in their words and actions.

The statement from the Diocese of Mangalore underscores the sensitivity surrounding comments made about religious figures and highlights the importance of respectful dialogue in the international arena. It remains to be seen how the U.S. government will respond to this formal expression of concern from the Indian Diocese.
