Heavy Rain Forecast: Advisory for Public by Udupi District Administration

Udupi: According to the prior warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, Bangalore, the coastal areas of the state are expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms over the next week (from June 11 to 17). Additionally, there is a possibility of increased wave heights in the sea, as stated in a release by the Udupi District Administration.

In this context, the District Disaster Management Authority has issued several precautionary instructions for the public and officials.

The public, children, and laborers are advised not to venture outside during rain, wind, and lightning conditions and should seek shelter in proper buildings. Farmers should refrain from agricultural activities during rain and thunderstorms. Moreover, the public, tourists, and fishermen should exercise caution and avoid going near rivers, water bodies, and the sea.

During this period, children and the public should not play near dangerous trees, electric poles, and should keep away from broken electric wires.

People should avoid going near weak or old buildings or trees and should not stand beneath trees. If there are dangerous creepers, vines, or branches on buildings, they should be trimmed in advance to protect the structures.

Due to heavy rainfall during these days, landslides may occur in some areas. Therefore, residents of such areas are advised to contact the Tahsildar’s office or village panchayat staff and stay in nearby relief centers if needed.

Since rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is expected, the public is advised to stay indoors and avoid going outside. Those residing in weak buildings or in case of necessity may take shelter in nearby relief centers as a precaution.

District and Taluk level officials, designated nodal officers, and members of the local disaster management committees are required to be positioned at the control center to manage the disaster effectively, as informed in the release by the District Disaster Management Authority chaired by District Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari.
