Labor Day Celebrations in Thottam Church Highlight Dignity and Rights of Workers

Malpe: Emphasizing the inherent dignity and honour of all workers, Fr. Denis D’Sa, Parish Priest of St. Anne’s Church Thottam, presided over the Labour Day celebrations held on Thursday at the Thottam Church auditorium. The event, jointly organized by the Labour and Migrant Workers Commission, focused on acknowledging the crucial role of labourers in society and advocating for their rights.

Fr. D’Sa stressed the sanctity of all forms of labour and the fundamental right of every worker to receive equitable compensation. He cautioned against the increasing prevalence of human idleness in the face of technological advancements and the potential dangers of individuals considering themselves infallible. “Even as artificial intelligence permeates our world,” he stated, “we must never forget its human origins. Consequently, from the most junior labourer to those in positions of authority, all deserve equal respect.”

Senior Civil Judge P.R. Yogish, Member-Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Udupi, served as the chief guest, inaugurating the event and informing attendees about the range of services offered by the Legal Services Authority. His presence underscored the importance of legal protection and support for the labour force.

District Labour Officer Althaf Ahmed provided a detailed overview of the various schemes and initiatives available to construction workers through the department. Entrepreneur Alwyn Quadros, Director of Durotop Construction, Udupi, contributed valuable insights into the possibilities and pathways to self-employment.

The program saw significant participation from community leaders, including Kundapur division labour inspector Vijendra K, Parish Pastoral committee vice president Sunil Fernandes, secretary Blessilla Crasta, coordinator of 20 commissions Vanita Fernandes, and convent principal Sister Sushma.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Veena Fernandes, followed by Vote of Thanks from Victor Menezes. Shanti Picardo served as the anchor for the proceedings, ensuring a smooth and engaging program that effectively highlighted the importance of recognizing and upholding the rights and dignity of workers.
