Sullia: The villages of Aletty, Mandekolu and others lying close to the boundary of Kerala have been the favourite haunts of wild elephants.

Twice recently they had crossed the Payaswini river and camped inside Sullia town limits. On either occasion, they had been driven back into the forest.

Apparently, the animals appear to be familiar with the route and may have developed a taste for the agricultural produce grown in living areas.

Over the weekend, the herd barged into farms of Janardana Bhat and Vasudeva Narkodu at Kanatota. A large number of banana, coconut and arecanut trees have perished in the havoc.

The herd was found crossing the link road between Narkodu and Ajjavara in broad daylight. The road has now been temporarily closed in the interest of safety of the people.

The panchayat members and local leaders appealed to the forest personnel to take immediate steps to drive the elephants. At present they are engaged in the operation.
