Karnataka declares 101 taluks drought-hit amid rain deficit

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Thursday declared 101 taluks across the state as drought-hit following a significant rainfall deficit, expressing concern over the difficulties faced by farmers and directing officials to initiate relief measures on a priority basis.

According to a government statement, between June 1 and August 21, 2026, rainfall deficiency was recorded in 29 districts, while only two districts received normal rainfall. At the taluk level, 176 taluks have been classified as receiving deficient rainfall, while 15 taluks have experienced severe rainfall deficiency. Only 49 taluks have received normal to excess rainfall during the period.

Considering the prevailing situation, the government has declared 101 taluks as drought-hit based on scientific assessment and prescribed guidelines. Of these, 89 taluks have been classified as severely affected, while 12 taluks have been categorised as moderately affected.

The drought declaration will come into effect immediately and will remain valid for six months from the date of the government order, unless it is revoked earlier by the state government.

To provide immediate relief and support to farmers, district commissioners have been instructed to undertake relief measures under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) guidelines. They have also been directed to conduct joint crop-loss surveys on a priority basis and submit reports immediately, enabling the government to assess the extent of damage and take appropriate measures.

The government said it would closely monitor rainfall forecasts and the condition of crops across the state. The situation will be reviewed every week, and additional taluks may be declared drought-hit in the coming days if the situation warrants such action.

The government said the inadequate rainfall and resulting uncertainty among farmers had caused serious concern and assured the farming community that it would provide necessary assistance during the difficult period.

Reassuring farmers, Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said it would stand firmly by them and take all possible measures to address their difficulties.

“No one needs to be anxious. We are with you and will stand by you throughout this difficult period,” he said, as per the statement.
