Mangalore, My Favourite Travel Destination: The City I Hold Close to My Heart

There are some cities we visit as travellers, while others gradually become part of our lives. For me, Mangalore, officially known as Mangaluru, belongs to the latter category. With its ancient temples, inviting bakeries, distinctive cuisine, vibrant cultural traditions, lush green parks, and beautiful Arabian Sea coastline, the city offers a memorable experience to every visitor. Yet, what makes Mangalore truly special to me goes beyond its attractions. As a native Konkani speaker, I have known this city as Kodial since childhood, and it continues to hold a special place in my heart. Every visit brings together the joy of travel and the warmth of cherished memories.

My visits to the temples in and around Mangalore have been among my most rewarding experiences. The peaceful atmosphere, traditional rituals, and devotion of worshippers fill me with happiness and spiritual satisfaction. I enjoy visiting these temples not merely as a traveller but also as someone who appreciates the faith and traditions preserved by generations. These moments of devotion remain an integral part of my memories of the city.

Food is another reason I love returning to Mangalore. The city offers a wonderful variety of traditional vegetarian dishes, Konkani specialities and coastal delicacies. The flavours of coconut, spices and fresh local ingredients give the region’s cuisine its distinctive character. I also enjoy visiting local bakeries and sampling their assortment of snacks and sweets. Discovering these local flavours is one of the great pleasures of travelling, and Mangalore makes food an enjoyable part of every visit.

The city’s parks and coastline add to its charm. I enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of its green spaces and the beautiful views of the Arabian Sea. The sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the vast horizon offer a welcome escape from the bustle of everyday life. These simple pleasures allow me to relax and appreciate the natural beauty that makes Mangalore such an appealing coastal destination.

Mangalore is equally fascinating for its linguistic and cultural diversity. Being a Konkani speaker, I feel a natural connection with the Konkani-speaking communities of the region. Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Beary, and other languages contribute to the city’s rich cultural landscape. The traditions, customs, and festivals of its diverse communities give Mangalore a distinctive identity. I admire how people preserve their languages and cultural heritage while sharing a common social space.

My memories of Mangalore also include the numerous social functions I have attended there. I have visited several auditoriums for weddings, upanayana ceremonies, commonly known as sacred-thread ceremonies, and other parties and family gatherings. These occasions have given me opportunities to share in the happiness of family members and friends. Traditional customs, festive meals, lively conversations, and joyful celebrations have created memories that go far beyond ordinary sightseeing.

Another connection I have with the city is Mangalorean.com, an online news portal established in 2003 that my family, friends, and I have followed for many years. Its coverage of local news, cultural events, community achievements and social concerns helps readers stay informed about Mangaluru and its wider community. I appreciate how the platform also enables people living far from their hometown to keep in touch with familiar places, festivals and local developments. I have followed its growth with interest and wish the team continued success.

Looking back on my visits, I fondly remember the devotion I have experienced in the temples, the pleasure of savouring local cuisine, the relaxing beauty of the coastline and the happiness of attending family celebrations. The region’s languages and traditions have also enriched my understanding of coastal Karnataka. Following local news through Mangalorean.com provides an additional way to stay connected with the city and its people.

Mangalore looks especially beautiful during Navaratri, when the festive atmosphere adds to the city’s charm. The celebrations, decorations and cultural activities bring communities together and offer visitors an opportunity to experience the region’s traditions and vibrant cultural life.

Mangalore will always remain my favourite travel destination and one of the most cherished places in my life. Its temples, cuisine, coastline, cultural diversity and community celebrations have all contributed to my lasting affection for the city. The name Kodial, familiar to me since childhood, reflects my Konkani roots and my enduring connection with this place.

For me, Mangalore is much more than a destination on a travel itinerary. It is a place where language, tradition, natural beauty, and personal experiences come together, making every visit worthwhile and every memory precious.
