Changing Morning Newspaper Reading Habits and the Rise of Digital News Portals

My earliest memories of newspapers are closely connected with my father and his daily reading routine. Three newspapers arrived at our home every morning, making newspapers an important part of our family life. Watching this regular presence of newspapers in our home nurtured my interest in reading and introduced me to the world beyond my immediate surroundings. As I grew older, I developed a lasting habit of reading two or even three newspapers every morning. I enjoyed going through headlines, local reports, editorials, and feature articles to understand different events and viewpoints. Newspapers became my trusted companions and an essential part of my daily routine. Never did I imagine that the morning ritual I had followed for so many years would eventually begin, quite often, with a mobile phone instead of a printed newspaper.

Today, I often check online news portals, news channels and social media soon after waking up. During the past year, our household has subscribed to just one printed newspaper, compared with the three that once arrived at our home. My personal experience reflects a broader shift in how people access information. News is now available almost instantly, allowing readers to follow developments throughout the day without waiting for the next morning’s edition.

Digital media have also created opportunities for ordinary people, teachers, students and independent writers to share their experiences and reach wider audiences. Platforms such as Mangalorean.com help readers stay connected with community news, cultural activities, educational achievements and local issues. WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and other digital platforms have become familiar channels for sharing information and ideas. They enable people to participate in public discussions and bring local experiences to the attention of readers across geographical boundaries.

Despite the growing reach of digital platforms, printed newspapers remain valuable. They offer detailed reports, editorials, background analysis, and the pleasure of uninterrupted reading. Online portals provide speed, frequent updates, photographs, and videos. Both forms of media have an important role to play, provided they uphold accuracy, fairness, and responsibility. Readers also have a duty to question sensational headlines and verify information before believing or sharing it. In an age when news travels rapidly, credibility matters more than ever.

As someone who has enjoyed newspapers for decades, I wonder how print journalism will adapt in the years ahead. Newspapers may explore new formats, strengthen their digital editions and find fresh ways to engage younger readers. Whatever direction they take, I hope they will preserve the values of careful reporting and credible journalism. Digital portals, too, must continue to earn public trust through accurate reporting, fairness and meaningful coverage.

My own experience has taught me that the medium through which we read the news may change, but our need to understand the world remains. I still value the printed newspaper, even as I appreciate the convenience of online news. Making thoughtful use of both can help us stay informed while allowing time for deeper reading and reflection. Ultimately, the question is not whether print or digital media will prevail, but whether the news we read helps us understand the world truthfully or not. Online media are becoming popular day by day. What happened to land phones today, similar may be the case with print media particularly newspaper dailies. Fast news and reliability are becoming the need of the hour. Media like mangalorean.com is playing a crucial role in it. The popularity of such news portals itself is evidence. We should keep a balance between these two because both are our guides: one ancestral and the other we call Gen Z.
