Govt will bring model sports policy in the Country – Pramod Madhwaraj

Udupi: Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Services and Sports, said that after holding discussions with sports bodies, sportspersons and associations in every divisional headquarters, the State government would try to formulate a model sports policy.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Stakeholders discussion meeting of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru district at the Town Hall here on Tuesday, September 27.

The government proposes to include private and public participation in the maintenance and operation of the stadiums in the State in the new sports policy. Before presenting the report in the cabinet, we will discuss it with the Primary and Higher secondary, Higher Education minister and also the Health minister and submit the report to the Chief Minister.

As per the proposal, the government would enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with private agencies or corporates under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme for maintenance and operation of facilities in the stadiums.

He also said that as per the draft proposal, in a year, 100 days would be allotted to the government for conducting various sports activities and the remaining 265 days, private agencies and corporates would conduct sports-related activities in such stadiums. Maintenance would be shared by the government and the corporates or private agencies.

A committee under his chairmanship has been constituted to hold consultation with stakeholders for framing the new sports policy, he added.

Dr Mohan Alva Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation said that government should help private institutions for preparing sports persons, and should give them grace marks in their acadamic syllabus. The state government should allot maximum amount for Sports activities in the annual Budget, he added.

Sports person and also the former principal of St Philomena College Puttur Fr Gomes said that we should train our students at the primary level. The sports policy should give importance to appointing Sports Guides and Counsellors; it would help the sports students to improve their level in sports activities.

Anupam Agarwal, Deputy Director of Sports Karnataka, Dinesh Putran sports person, Priyanka Mary Francis CEO Zilla Panchayat and others were present.
