Minister Pramod Visits Shelter for Widows Gutted in Fire

Udupi: A shelter for the widows caught fire here on Saturday, April 29 afternoon at the mission compound near UMBC Church.

According to sources, three widows were staying in the shelter for many years. On Saturday two of them had gone out for work, while the other lady was cooking using firewood. A spark from the fire ignited the stock of firewood which soon engulfed the entire area. The woman who was cooking inside ran out and escaped unhurt in the incident.

The locals alerted the fire tenders who immediately rushed to the spot and doused the fire. The fire destroyed the entire building. All belongings of the inmates were shifted outside with the help of locals.

Soon after hearing the news District in-charge minister, Pramod Madhwaraj visited the spot and handed over immediate compensation of Rs 5000 to each of the three women and also promised to give maximum compensation from the government.
