Two-day long Sagar Kavach’ Exercise Underway in Udupi District

Udupi: A two-day Coastal Security Exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ began off the coast of Udupi district on October 7 to assess the preparedness of all agencies towards dealing with an asymmetric threat emanating from the sea.

Coastal Interceptor boats, Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Police, Civil Police and other coastal security agencies participated in the exercise that undertook round-the-clock patrolling of the coastline. Extensive aerial surveillance of the coastal waters was also carried out by aircraft to detect the opposing force.

The operation started at 8:00 am in the morning and will be carried on till 8:00 pm on October 8. Though this is mainly for security purposes, the inconvenience to the public was obvious.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com Chethan R, Superintendent of Police Coastal security police said, “The two-day exercise, which is being aimed at providing seamless seaward cover along the coastline, jointly by all security agencies from the coastal belt area line to the limit of territorial waters. The exercise will also assess the effectiveness of the coastal fishing community in serving as ‘eye and ears’ for early warning of seaward threat”.
