Udupi: The Congress government is definite on its stand on empowering Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, said Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Urban Development and Minister in-charge District.

He was speaking at a meeting organized to discuss the progress of the welfare projects implemented for SC/ST at Rajathadri, Manipal here on October 13.

The government has sanctioned Rs 17.50 lakh for the construction of a crematorium in Uchila and its construction work will be initiated soon. Landless people will be sanctioned land on priority basis. Scholarships to students will be given as per the notification issued by the Social Welfare Department. The roster scheme will be implemented while granting licenses for sand mining and setting up of shops in Malpe beach area for the people of the SC/ST community.

Fifty cents of land has been granted for the Koraga community in Padubidri; likewise others will be given plots in government land by the district administration. A statue of B R Ambedkar will be erected in front of the deputy commissioner’s office with a grant of Rs 14 lakh, he added.

ZP member Gopi K Naik said that the crusher activities in Karje are creating problems for the people belonging to the SC/ST community. She urged the minister to initiate action in this regard. The minister instructed for a probe into the mining activities in Karje.

Deputy commissioner R Vishal, Superintendent of Police Annamalai K., Zilla Panchayat CEO Kanagavalli and others were present.
