Mangaluru: TEN Things you must know and share about Coronavirus aka Covid-19:

1. Do not panic with irresponsible media reports as the Case fatality is very low.

2. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Around 1 out of every 6 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, are more likely to develop serious illness. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention.

3. Clean your hands with alcohol hand rub, maintain 3 feet distance and avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth often without uncleaned hands.

4. Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hot spots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). If possible, avoid traveling to places – especially if you are an older person or have diabetes, heart or lung disease.

5. CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. A face mask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms.

6. Do not take antibiotics for virus treatment. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not virus.

7. No home remedies can protect against COVID-19, including vitamin C, essential oils, silver colloid, sesame oil, garlic, and sipping water every 15 minutes.

8. Over 80% of patients who get infected with the virus recover fully as the human body has a good immune system that fights the virus. But getting professional help from your family physician is important.

9. There is no immediate treatment other than managing fever, cough and other symptoms, but some clinical trials in patients consenting have been initiated to understand the virus response.

10. Lastly, avoid travels to heavily affected destination as this is a game of probability. The odds that the virus can catch you is only when you remain in close contact with an infected person.
