From ‘Bella Candy’ to ‘Panak Candy’- Ideal’s Going Very Traditional! ‘PANAK Candy’-Traditional Recipe with a Divine Taste!

Mangaluru: If one delves into the science behind traditional cuisine, passed on by our ancestors, nothing but amazement astounds us for their wisdom in designing such recipes. ‘Panakam’ in Tamil or ‘Panak’ in our local Konkani language is one such drink which is made in abundance, especially during Sri Ramanavami and Narasimha Jayanti festivals, and also prepared during marriages and traditional festivities also in the Coastal regions. Across the Tamil Nadu State, people guzzle this sweet peppery flavoured drink with a combination of ‘vadapappu’ (moong dal), assigning a distinctive mark to the festival. Made with a mixture of jaggery, soonti (dry ginger), black pepper and cardamom, “Panakam”(Panak) acts as a coolant in the hot sweltering summer. Say “Vanakam” (hello) to “Panakam”!

It is a known fact that seasonal variations introduce a multitude of changes in health conditions of the human body. Heat during the summer causes variations in Vaatham (lethargy) and Kafam (phlegm), while Jataraagni (the fire which induces hunger) subsides leading to loss of appetite. The ingredients in “Panakam” counteract such elements and provide an instantaneous rejuvenating feel to the one who consumes it. In addition to that, when consumed with ‘vadapappu’ it aids the digestion offering a one-stop solution to all the ills during summer. ‘Panakam’ aka ‘Panak’ is a wholesome food when compared to today’s cola drinks which are high in calories and zero nutrition.

Having said all about “Panakam” aka “Panak”, locally here in Kudla, Mukund Kamath, the Managing Director of Ideal’s Ice Cream and Entrepreneur of Award Winning Ice-Creams, who couple of months ago launched ‘Bella Candy’ (Jaggery Candy) of yesteryears, gave away nearly 2500 such candies free to kids and adults during the Rx Life-BSA Cycle rally held on 11 December 2016. The introduction of “Bella Candy” did bring back memories of their childhood for many seniors and adults when they once again bit into this delicious and mouthwatering Popsicle, which also quenches your thirst during treacherous warm days.

And one month later, Mukund Kamath who wanted to add one more traditional item after “Bella Candy”, wanted to give a trial on yet another ancestor’s traditional drink “Panak” in the form of a candy. And there you have it- Ideal’s newest traditional recipe with a divine taste in the form of a candy named “Panak Candy”. When ethnic taste and healthy ingredients are served wrapped around a stick, your taste buds would crave for more- and that’s the beauty and goodness of “Panak Candy”.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Mukund said, “We had started the trial productions in July 2016 and have thus far tried out some 15 varieties of traditional recipes which we wanted to create in the form of Ice Candies. After “Bella Candy” got a good response since it not only tasted good but also invoked memories of the yesteryears among our locals, I thought why to introduce one more traditional candy named “Panak Candy”. We have gone in for a retro feel of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s with the package to sell this product in a modern era, where the consumer is health conscious and mindful of what he/she eats. The ingredients used in ‘Panak Candy’ are Jaggery water, black pepper, ginger and lime- and it has got a tangy spicy flavour. We decided to keep the introductory price as Rs 10 so that everyone can try the divine taste of this new candy marketed at a very low price. I am confident that ‘Panak Candy’ could well become a household item to crave for during this hot summer days”.

Attention all you ice candy lovers, if you want to put some “Spice” with a touch of “Sweetness” in your life, you will surely love this “Panak Candy” which is purely made of jaggery (no added sugar, artificial flavours or colours), black pepper, ginger and lime.
