ACB Raids RTO Varnekar’s House, Unearths Rs 70.18 lakh Cash

Mangaluru: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths raided the residence of the Udupi RTO, R M Varnekar for disproportionate assets to known sources of income and unearthed Rs 70.18 lakh from his house on March 18.

RTO officer Varnekar was arrested on March 16 while he was accepting bribe to release the tax refund amount of a burnt car during the air show. Varnekar was later sent to judicial custody.

The ACB sleuths raided Varnekar’s house in Mangaluru. During the raid, the officers found Rs 70.18 lakh cash and assets including documents of houses, land and 2 bank locker keys.

Varnekar had demanded Rs 6,500 bribe from Vignesh Karkal to release the car documents which he needed to submit to the insurance company. Varnekar also informed Vignesh to contact his office staff Munaf. Vignesh filed a complaint against Varneker, on March 16, Varnekar was caught red-handed by the ACB police while accepting the bribe from Vignesh.

During the raid on March 16 on his office, the police had seized Rs 30,000 cash and sent him to judicial custody.

The ACB police are investigating the case.
