Mangaluru: The 31st Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan was carried out by Ramakrishna Mission in Kadri Park – Padua area on 20 December, 2015 from 7:30 to 10:30 am. Dr S Viswanath (Senior Scientist, NAL, Bengaluru) and Vasanth Kumar Perla (Director of All India Radio, Mangaluru) flagged off the 30th drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamanandaji, President of Ramakrishna Math and MLC Capt. Ganesh Karnik.
A group from Art of Living, students from Govt. First Grade College under Prof. Sheshappa Amin & Prof. Mahesh K B, volunteers from Nivedita Balaga under Rathna Alva & Sheela Shetty and students of Bharathi Pre University College under the leadership of Subhadra Bhat actively participated in the abhiyan.
Roopa D Bangera, K V Sathyanarayana, Dilraj Alva, Surynarayan Bhat, K Ashok, Sharabhendra Swamy of AIR, Suresh Shetty, Umanath Kotekar, M R Vasudeva, Ramkumar Bekal, Jayakrishna and several other eminent personalities also participated in the abhiyan.
Volunteers cleaned the surroundings of All India Radio campus under the leadership of Vasudev and Capt. Ganesh Karnik. The road leading from AIR to Kadri Park was also cleaned. Weeds and grass that were covering the footpaths and encroaching upon the road near Kadri Park were removed using a JCB excavator.
The bus shelter at Padua wore a ghastly look. Volunteers cleaned the shelter and painted the railings and the bus shelter itself, providing it with a facelift. The direction board near Kadri Park was worn out. It was repainted for the benefit of the public. The milestones indicating distance on the Padua highway was invisible due to wild grass enveloping it. The grass was removed and the board was repainted.
The circle in front of Vas Bakery in St Agnes area was cleaned and repair work was done last week. This week too, the work was continued on the circle by plastering it with cement. The circle will be painted with art and graffiti in the coming days.
Volunteers also distributed handbills on Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan to generate awareness among the localites in the area.
