Former Councillor of Moodbidri Sheenappa (70) No More

Moodbidri: M Sheenappa (70), a respectable community leader, former member of the town municipal council and timber entrepreneur, passed away at his residence in Ponnechari here on Monday, July 25 morning. He was unwell for a brief period.

He is survived by wife and three daughters. His brother P M Narayana is engaged in Nishmita bus transport and owns Nishmita Towers. Sanjeeva, another brother of his, is also an entrepreneur.

Sheenappa had taken over the saw mill business from his late father Subba Poojary and run it for the last 45 years.

He was known as a philanthropist and generous donor. He had helped many financially weak families for getting their children married. He had often written off long-term loans when the borrowers were unable to repay them. He had also provided free firewood for a number of cremations.

Hailing from Aliyoor, he was an art patron and had sponsored the shows of Kateel and Sunkadakatte Yakshagana troupe’s shows.

Fondly known to everyone as ‘Sheenappanne’, he was a prominent and influential leader of the Billava community and was instrumental in strengthening its organization and intensifying its activities. He was also the founder-president of Lions Club of Moodbidri.

He was active in politics as well. As a long-time associate of former minister Amaranath Shetty Kodman, he had served in Congress (O) and later in undivided Janata Party and Janata Dal (S). Elected to the Moodbidri municipal council for three terms, he had served as vice president with Amaranath Shetty as president.

The traders in Moodbidri downed their shutters for an hour on Monday as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
