Mangaluru: Journalists Stage Protest against Assault on Asif, Demand Justice

Mangaluru: Journalists from Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Union (DKWJU) and DK district Press Club staged a protest regarding the recent threats and attack on a journalist in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here, on February 29.

Asif, a journalist from Beltangady, was allegedly attacked and given life threat by ganja peddlers when he was collecting information on ganja racket in the district.

A memorandum was submitted to the police commissioner by President of KJU, Sudesh Kumar, which lauded the police department for action taken against the accused. The memorandum sought protection from the department against future attacks on journalists and media outlets.

A memorandum was submitted to the DC by President of Press Club Jagannath Shetty Bala which condemned such attacks on journalists. The protesting journalists said that the work that was supposed to be done by the police was being done by Asif. Further they said that they would not stop the protest if proper action would not be taken.

Journalist Arif said, “We are also ready to go on a hunger strike if the situation does not change. There are continuous attacks on journalists, the district administration should take strict action against the attackers and provide safety to Journalists.”
