10K Plus Runners Converge at Mangala Stadium for ‘Sahyadri 10k Run Mangaluru’ Creating a BIG History

We believe, by spreading ‘Green, Healthy – Mangaluru’ through the involvement and participation of the general public, hailing from various backgrounds, we will be able to achieve our motto. We are inviting the Common Public, Government Agencies, Institutions, Companies, Corporates, Social Organizations and people from various walks of life. ‘Health & Fitness Consciousness is the Need of the Hour’. This criterion can be achieved by getting massive participation by a large number of people and awareness can thus be spread across Dakshina Kannada Region. Dakshina Kannada Athletic Association (DKAA) is a 45-year-old Association. It has conducted Athletic Meet at National and International levels and has contributed towards creating many Olympians for the country. Bhandary Foundation is a Charitable Trust ® running an educational institution and promoting Sports, Games and Social Awareness programs for more than a decade.“We want healthy Mangaluru. “Come, All Youngsters, Women and Men, join with us for a brighter future”

Mangaluru: Our Kiudla aka Mangaluru aka Kodiyal aka Mangalapuram has seen various Marathons/Runs, but never in the history has seen over 10,000 plus runners who enthusiastically and with determination participated in the “SAHYADRI 10K RUN-Mangaluru, which was held today at Mangala Stadium on Sunday, 2 February 2020, thereby making a HISTORY. The runners were predominately mixed, comprising of Seniors, Middle-aged and young., ‘Sahyadri 10K Run Mangaluru’ was organised by Dakshina Kannada Athletic Association- DKAA and promoted by Bhandary Foundation was held on Sunday, 2nd February, and from 6:00 am onwards at Mangala Stadium, Mangaluru. With the tag-line of ‘Swaccha – Parisara – Hasiru – Usiru’, in order to accomplish this mission and to create awareness in line with Central Government’s Initiative of Fit India Programme, an event of such magnitude was organised.

The event was organised exclusively in association with the: Dept. of Youth Empowerment & Sports, Govt. of Karnataka; Mangalore University; Visvesvaraya Technological University; Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science; and Karnataka Athletics Association (KAA). The “Title Sponsor” was Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Mangaluru, and Gurukiran, Music Director Film Industry was the Brand Ambassador. The event was sponsored by Union Bank of India, Allcargo Logistics Ltd., Canara Bank, Hangyo Ice Cream, SCDCC Bank Ltd., Sams Techno Mach Pvt. Ltd., Qtalk, Ramakrishna Mission Mangaluru, Mphasis, Sleepwell, RDC Concrete, Garodi Steels, M. S Pai & Co. and Kanishka Gas Agency, Bengaluru.

There were various dignitaries and eminent personalities from different walks of life who graced this gigantic event of spreading awareness of a healthy environment. The 10K Run was flagged off by guests B M Laxmi Prasad (IPS), Superintendent of Police-DK; S.S. Dasila, TM, Commander, Indian Coast Guard, Panambur; Swami Jithakamanandaji, Adhyaksha-Ramakrishna Mutt, Mangaluru and Dr B Yashovarma, Secretary, SDM Education Institution & Patron-DKA, SDM, Ujire. The other guests who flagged off 5K Competitive Run were Dr Shivakumar, Registrar, Visveswaraiah Technological University (VTU), Belagavi; Pradeep G. Pai & Mrs. Deepa Pai- Managing Director, Hangyo Ice Cream Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru and Dr M.N. Rajendra Kumar, Chairman, SCDCC Bank, Mangaluru.

2K Run for Boys was flagged off by Yogish Acharya, General Manager, Canara Bank, Mangaluru; Sagar Modi- Founder & CEO, Quiph, Bengaluru; Kishore Alva, President, Adani Power Limited, Karnataka; K. Govindaraj, MLC, President, Karnataka Olympic Association, Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru and Ajith Kumar Hegde S, Commissioner-City Corporation, Dakshina Kannada, among others. 5K Maza Run Flag Off was by Dr P. Subramanya Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, Mangaluru; K.P. Purushotham, Vice-Chairman, Sports Authority of Karnataka, Govt of Karnataka; Dr P.S. Harsha (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru; Vinay Hegde Chancellor, NITTE Education Trust ®, Deralakatte, Mangaluru, and Shashikiran Shetty, Chairman, AI Cargo Logistics Ltd, Mumbai.

2K Run for Girls was flagged off by Vivek Alva-the son of Dr Mohan Alva Chairman, Alvas Education Foundation Trust (R), Moodbidri; Sindhu B. Roopesh (IAS), Deputy Commissioner, RGUHS-Bengaluru; Dr B. Vasanth Shetty, Deputy Registrar, RGUHS, Bengaluru; Jyothika, Director, Thetherfi, Mangaluru; Deekshith Rai, CEO-Codecraft Technologies, Mangaluru; Srinivas Bhat, Head, HR-Diya Systems, Mangaluru, and Shipra Rai, Inclusion Manager, Mphasis Pvt Ltd, Mangaluru.

Chairman of Sahyadri Co0llege Manjunath Bhandary, speaking to Team Mangalorean expressed how Dakshina Kannada District has been contributing to the Olympian list and has also been conducting Marathons for the last few years successfully. Sahyadri 10K Run Mangaluru was first proposed by Anand Menezes – a international athlete whom Bhandary met in Mumbai Marathon last year. He then mentioned the support he received from universities like Mangalore University, Rajiv Gandhi University for Health Sciences and Visvesvaraya Technological University which further strengthened his plan to organize this event. For today’s 10K Run event there were over 200 invitees, 150 technical officials, and over 500 of the general public who attended. Last but not least there were around 600 volunteers who took utmost care in preparations and setting up and smooth conducting of activities of the morning.

The following categories of Run were organized:

. Challenge Run – 10K – Men & Women

· 10K Elite Run – Fit India (above 18 years)

· 10K Open All (above 18 years)

· 10K for Students (18 to 25 years)

This saw a participation of around 410 runners, comprising of students, and professionals viz. doctors, teachers, engineers, lawyers etc. from in and around Mangaluru.

Future Run – 2K for Students – Boys & Girls:

This category of Run was organised for teens aged between 14-16 years, wherein the selected boys & girls will be trained under DKAA, to produce Future Champions of Mangaluru. There were around 1,200 to 1,500 participants. They were School Boys & Girls, from 70+ schools in and around Mangaluru and also schools from other parts of Karnataka.

5K – Competitive Run for Men & Women:

5K Run is to prepare the future runners to the National and International Champions with age between 16 to 25 years. Around 720 participants (students from various colleges) in and around Mangaluru, actively participated.

5K – Maza with Healthy Run – Open to all:

This is in line with Fit India Movement, 5K Maza Run is for Men and Women. Their participation to spread awareness about fitness culture will accomplish the mission of Swaccha – Parisara – Hasiru – Usiru. This saw a participation of around 6,500 to 7,000 runners including people from 50+ institutions, organisations and also the General Public.

The runners with their enthusiastic participation and the various guests with their gracious presence have all made the Sahyadri 10K Run a memorable event to remember for years to come.
