2 boats capsize in Arabian sea, 16 fishermen rescued

Udupi: Two fishing boats that had left from Malpe capsized between Gangolli and Bhatkal on Saturday. However, all 16 fishermen in the two boats were rescued.

Shiva Ganesh, owned by Shobha Dinakar and Padmadas, owned by Santhosh S Kunder, had eight fishermen each on board when the incident occurred. Shobha Dinakar incurred losses of Rs 70 lakh, while Kunder Rs 90 lakh.

The Coastal Security Police said that attempts to bring the boats to the shore failed as the boats drowned completely. Shiva Ganesh had left for fishing from Malpe on August 9. According to Dinakar, the boat capsized as welding of the boat loosened.

As situation worsened, those inside the boat contacted the fishermen in the nearby boat and requested them to rescue.

The fishermen from three fishing boats Shiva Bramari, Shiva Nidhi and Shiva Vallaba tried to pull the capsized Shiva Ganesh. Due to heavy waves, it capsized finally 30 miles from Gangolli, Shobha Dinkar stated in a memorandum submitted to Fisheries department Deputy Director.

The fishermen in Jai Bhajarangi boat rescued eight of their counterparts from Padmadas boat which capsized. The eight fishermen were brought to Malpe safely. The video of the rescue operation has gone viral on social media.
The Malpe police said that nobody has lodged complaints about the incident so far.
