5 arrested in Jain Tirthankar ancient Idols theft case

Kundapur: Five persons have been arrested in connection with the theft case of ancient idols of Jain Tirthankars by the Kundapur police near Koteshwar here on February 24.

The arrested have been identified as Nevil Wilfy Mascarenhas from Padil, Ashton Sequeira from Kulshekar, Anil Furtado from Talaguppa Sagar, John and Anil from Kundapur.

On February 24, Nevil, Ashton and Anil had parked their car near Kotilingeshwar Temple at Koteshwar and were waiting for customers to sell the stolen idols. On getting reliable information, the Kundapur police got into action, raided the spot and arrested the accused. John and Anil who were waiting at a distance from the spot were also arrested by the Kundapur police.

The police have seized four brass idols of Jain Tirthankar, mobile phones, a cash counting machine and Rs 40,000 cash from their possession.

The Kundapur police have registered a case and are investigating.
