5 Congress Leaders including Former Speaker Detained at MIA

Mangaluru: Congress leaders including former Speaker Ramesh Kumar were detained by the police at the Mangaluru International Airport here on December 20.

Former Speaker Ramesh Kumar, S R Patil, Basavaraj Rayareddy, Ugrappa and M B Patil had come to Mangaluru to meet the families of the deceased who lost their lives in the police firing on December 19. All of them were stopped by the police from getting out of the airport.

Speaking to mangalorean.com corporator Vinayraj said, “On December 19, morning Former Speaker Ramesh Kumar, S R Patil, Basavaraj Rayareddy, Ugrappa and M B Patil landed in the Mangaluru International airport. They had come to Mangaluru to meet the family members of Jalil and Nausheer who lost their lives in the police firing. The situation got worse when they were not allowed to get out of the airport. Ramesh Kumar screamed at the police saying that he wanted to go to Jalil and Nausheer’s house to meet their families.”

Vinayraj further said, “When All the 5 leaders were about to come out of the airport, they were detained by the police and were kept in the police bus. Later they were taken to the departure area from where they departed to Bengaluru without meeting the deceased families.”

DCC President Harish Kumar, MLC Ivan D’Souza and other Congress leaders were also present in the airport to receive the leaders.
