7 People Arrested In Raid on Illegal Cockfight at Kota

Udupi: The Kota police on April 6 raided the Kavadi Mahlingeshwara Temple ground and arrested 7 persons who were involved in gambling on a cockfight and recovered properties worth Rs 1.72 lakhs.

The arrested have been identified as Madhukar (33), Jayaram Shetty (49), Prashanth (42), Raghavendra (39), Lokesh Barkur (35), Sudhakar (39), and Suketh (29)

On getting reliable information that cockfight was being held for gain, the team led by Nithyananda Gowda PSI Kota raided the area and arrested 7 persons. Police seized Rs 6880 cash, 2 live roosters worth Rs 1000 and 8 two-wheelers all estimated to  be worth of Rs 1.72 lakhs. Two persons escaped from the spot leaving their vehicles.

The accused have been booked under the Cruelty to Animals Act and also for violating SC guidelines against cockfight.

The cockfight is a form of gambling where sharp knives are tied to the legs of birds that are made to fight while punters gamble on the winning rooster.

  1. Playing and betting using cocks for entertainment should be banned! Police should seize the cocks and fine those indulging in cockfight!
