98 Students Test Positive for Drug Use; Follow-Up Tests Show Encouraging Results
Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that the police had tested a total of 8,310 students from 150 colleges this year as part of efforts to identify and address drug use among students.
Of those tested, 98 students tested positive for drug use. The students were subsequently referred for counselling with the involvement of their respective colleges and parents.
To follow up on the progress of the students and verify the results of the counselling, a special drive was conducted yesterday, during which 50 students who had tested positive during the first phase of testing were tested again.
Of the 50 students retested, 38 tested negative and stated that they had stopped using drugs.
“It is encouraging to see that more than 75 per cent of the students who initially tested positive have now tested negative,” the Police Commissioner said.
The parents and college management have been advised to closely monitor and follow up on the counselling and rehabilitation of the remaining 12 students who tested positive during the follow-up testing.
