A J Hospital conducts FIRST Bone Marrow Transplant on 55-year-old Patient

Mangaluru: A patient, 55 years male from Uttara Kannada, presented with a severe backache. He was diagnosed to have multiple myeloma, a type of blood-related cancer, which spreads to bones and makes them weak. He received induction chemotherapy for 4 months followed by Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant.

Autologous bone marrow transplant involves three major steps – stem cell collection, high dose chemotherapy and stem cell transfusion. The patient was admitted to the hospital after his bone marrow was in remission due to cancer. He received growth factors for four days and then his stem cells were harvested. The patient was given high dose chemotherapy. The stem cells collected previously were transfused on the next day. The patient was managed in sterile HEPA filter Positive Press Ventilation room till he recovered.
