A Way Forward…Fisheries College-Mangaluru to Celebrate ‘Golden Jubilee’ {1969-2019} – Prof (Dr) H. Shivananda Murthy assumed the charge of Dean, College of Fisheries.

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Prof {Dr} H Shivananda Murthy, the Dean of Fisheries College, Mangaluru said, ” The College of Fisheries, Mangaluru was established in the year 1969 as the Country’s First Fisheries College and Second in Asia (after Japan) by the then University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and currently is a constituent College under Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar. The visionary like Dr K C Naik felt the need of the professional fisheries college and identified a leader like Prof. HPC Shetty who is considered as Father of Fisheries College to lead the college and he served as Director for 18 long years. Best brains form all over the country was handpicked to lead this institute.”

He further said, “Retaining the natural terrain, the architects from Auburn University and India designed the campus and stand unique even during modern times. The mandate of the College is to plan, undertake, aid, promote and co-ordinate education, research and extension in Fisheries Science. Being a premier Fisheries Institute, the College has played a key role in Fisheries Education and research in the country. The College has two campuses. The main campus comprises Administrative block, Library and Departments of Aquaculture, Fisheries Resources and Management, Fisheries Environment Management, Fisheries Microbiology, Fishery Economics and units of Basic Sciences, the estate branch, career guidance cell for students and guest house are located in the main campus. The technology wing has two departments such as Fish processing technology and Fishery Engineering”.

“Presently, there are 26 colleges established in the country on the lines of Mangalore college. Even now the college of Fisheries, Mangaluru stands best in terms of infrastructure, research and education. Till date more than 1400 students have graduated from this institute and the fishcos-commonly grads of this college referred as so, are there all over the world. The alumnus have occupied different positions like Director of General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, Chancellor of National Agriculture University, Vice Chancellors, Deans, ADGP, DCP, Commissioners are some of the examples” added Prof. Murthy.

Briefing about the events planned during the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Dr Shivakumar Magada, Professor of Aquatic Biology said, “The curtain raiser of Golden Jubilee was held on 17.07.2018. Sri Venkatarao Nadagowda, Hon’ble Minister of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Government of Karnataka unveiled the logo of golden jubilee; Centre for Applied Research on Problematic Soils (CARPS) was also dedicated to the nation during the golden jubilee year; Series of golden jubilee guest lectures are planned every month; Establishment of bust of Prof. HPC Shetty-First Director of Instruction and considered as Father of Fisheries College, Mangaluru; Construction of Golden Jubilee memorial hall (GJMH) and museum”

“Marathon 5K: To celebrate 50 years of service and promote fish eating; Grand Fishco-Festival: Intercollegiate cultural fest; Global Alumni Meet: Grand home coming of fishcos during September 2019. It is a three days event with exhibition, cultural programs, interactions, guruvandane etc.; National Workshop and conferences; All India Fisheries College Youth Festival; and many others programs” added Dr Magada. Dr Gangadhara Gowda- Professor and Head of Division {Fisheries and Science} was also present on the dais during the press meet.

Prof H Shivananda Murthy has taken over the charge of Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangaluru. He has earlier served as Registrar of Karnataka Veterinary and Fisheries University (KVAFSU), Bidar. He also worked earlier as Director of Extension at the same University at the Head Quarters Bidar for a full term of three years earlier. He was a faculty and former Professor & Head Department of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, Mangaluru. He is an alumnus of the College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, obtained his Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctoral (Ph.D) Degree in Fisheries/Aquaculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. The Board of Management of KVAFSU), Bidar had decided that Prof Shivananda Murthy to take over as Dean of this prestigious college, which is in the year of Golden Jubilee and to organize the Golden Jubilee Celebrations in a befitting manner.

Prof Shivananda Murthy has guided 40 Research Scholars for their high-quality thesis research work as Research Guide in Aquaculture, Fisheries Sciences & Biosciences. He has strong research background and served as Principal Investigator of 17 major externally funded major Research Projects in the areas of Aquaculture/fisheries funded by International Foundation for Science, Sweden and other international and national funding agencies and brought substantial research grants to the University and created infrastructure facilities in the form of center of excellence in extension education, E-resources centers, fish/prawn hatcheries, ponds and laboratories.

Prof Murthy has published more than 200 publications, out of which 135 research papers in national and international refereed journals, 15 books and other publications. He had Post Doctoral foreign research assignments in advanced Universities namely, University of Stirling, Scotland, U.K; Texas A & M University, USA and University of Santiago, Spain, and had short term visits to Denmark, Singapore, Norway, Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and other countries in connection research & development works including Chairing of Technical Sessions and Presentation of keynote/lead papers in International Conferences.

He is the recipient of the many awards and recognition for the outstanding contributions in R&D works in Aquaculture and fisheries, including National ‘Jawaharalal Nehru Award’ of the Government of India, New Delhi; ‘Sir C V Raman Award’ of the Government of Karnataka; ‘Best Research Award’ of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore; Overseas Fellowship Award of Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi; Fellowship Award of Overseas Development Administration (ODA), UK; International Foundation for Science, Sweden and other awards/recognition.

Prof Murthy had served as Member of various national/international prestigious/high level technical committees including the ‘National Committee of the Planning Commission’, New Delhi for expert advice in ‘Fisheries & Aquaculture’ for the formulation of the 12th Five Year Plan; Served as a Member of the Karnataka Biodiversity Board, Bangalore for three years; Technical Advisory Committee of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bangalore for 5 years; Served as Member of various national committees including Member of Selection Committees of various Universities; Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, other several other Universities and organizations;

He has organized 15 National / International Conferences / Workshops as Director/Organizing Secretary in Fisheries and Animal Sciences. Prof Shivananda Murthy has organized more than 60 National/State Level Training Programmes as Course Director in Aquaculture/Fisheries and Animal Sciences for the benefit of Farmers and Officials of the State Departments of Fisheries/Animal Husbandry/KMF/KVKs and other development Departments. Attended 20 international and 35 national conferences / workshops, presented lead papers and Chaired Technical Sessions.

He is the Associate Editor, International Journal of Aquaculture & Marine Science, USA; Member of the Editorial Board, International SDRP Journal of Aquaculture, Fisheries & Fish Science”, USA; Member of the Editorial Board, Journal of Aquaculture in the Tropics; Served as office bearer/member of various scientific societies and professional organizations including and member of various national and international scientific societies.

He had Post Doctoral foreign research assignments in advanced Universities namely, University of Stirling, Scotland, U.K; Texas A & M University, USA and University of Santiago, Spain; and short term visits to Denmark, Singapore, Norway, Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and other countries in connection with updation of educational technologies and research & development methodologies, including Chairing of Technical Sessions and Presentation of lead papers in International Conferences.
