Second of the six children of Mahabala Shetty, a progressive agriculturist, and Sarojini Shetty, she had been given in marriage to Arun Kumar Shetty from Bengaluru thirteen years ago.

Speaking to mediapersons on Sunday, Prabha’s father Mahabala Shetty appeared totally shattered. The sorrow as well as outrage in him could not be missed, when he demanded that the culprits be handed to their custody and they would punish them in a suitable manner. They are also concerned about the safety of Indians in general in Australia.

Prabha had completed her primary education in Amtoor and high school education in Mangaluru and obtained a BCA degree from the KVG College of Engineering in Sullia.

Arun Kumar is an automobile engineer, holding a top post in a private firm in Bengaluru. Prabha had served in a private firm for some time and after marriage secured an employment in MindTree software firm.

The firm had deputed her to Australia three years ago. Once a year, she would visit Bengaluru to spend time with the family. They have a nine-year-old daughter, Meghana. As soon as they got the information of the killing, Arun left for Australia, and according to the latest reports he has reached Sydney on Sunday evening.

The news of the tragedy has been kept away from Meghana. The utmost concern of the family members back home is as to how she will face the news about her dear mother. She is said to be puzzled over her father’s sudden departure to Australia.

Her eldest brother, Dr Shanker Shetty and wife live in Perth in Australia. Second elder brother Shivaprasad is employed in a private firm in Bengaluru, while the younger brother Nikhil lives with the parents in Amtoor.

The family members are in touch with the Union ministry of external affairs and the state government. They have sought an impartial investigation into the case and severe punishment meted out to the culprits. The motive for murder, whether robbery or otherwise, is yet to be established.

Prabha’s mortal remains are likely to be airflown to Bengaluru by Tuesday or Wednesday and the final rites would be held thereafter.
