IANS Updates:  4 rescued, 23 stuck on barge in Karnataka

Mangaluru (Karnataka), June 4 (IANS) Four workers were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard, while 23 workers were stranded on a flooded barge in the Arabian sea off Ullal in Karnataka’s west coast, police said on Saturday.

“A Coast Guard ship rescued four of the 27 workers on Barge Ibis, while 23 of them were still stranded when rescue operation was called off due to inclement weather,” Mangaluru Deputy Commissioner of Police K.M. Shantaraju told IANS.

Ullal near Mangaluru in Dakshin Kannada (South Canara) is about 350km from the state capital Bengaluru.

The Coast Guard ship Amartya, which brought the four rescued to the shore, will resume the operation on Sunday to save the remaining 23 men stuck on the barge.

“The Coast Guard swung into action when it received a distress call at 5:00 p.m. from the workers on the barge, located at 4km south of Old Port Mangaluru, ” said Shantaraju.

The workers on board the dregder were engaged in its operations when it got flooded by choppy sea water.

“On assessment of the weather condition in the area, Amartya lowered its inflatable rubber boat to the barge but could rescue only 4 workers due to bad weather,” a Coast Guard official told IANS on Saturday night.

The rescue operation was terminated in view of strong winds and heavy swell in the area.

Update: Coast Guard Karnataka rescued 04 personnel from Dredger Ibis (IMO No. 8209212), which was reported to be in distress 04 Kms South of Old Port Mangalore, off Kotepura at 08:00 PM on 03 June 2017.

Dredger Ibis, a 2964 GRT vessel, length 65.58 mtrs and breadth 32 mtrs, with 27 crew, was engaged in its operations South of Old Port Mangalore. Coast Guard Karnataka received a telephonic message at about 04:45 PM on 03 June 2017 from New Mangalore Port Trust regarding flooding in Barge Ibis.

On receipt of the message, the Operations Team of Coast Guard Karnataka immediately swung into action and as a first step directed Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Amartya, which was on patrol, to proceed with maximum available speed to render necessary assistance to the distressed Barge.

ICGS Amartya arrived at the position at 06:40 PM on 03 June 2017 and established communication with the Barge in distress. On the assessment of the weather condition in the area, ICGS Amartya lowered its Gemini (Inflatable rubber boat) with Diving Officer and Boarding Team at 06:48 PM. The Gemini arrived near Barge Ibis and notwithstanding the inclement weather in the area, towed liferaft of the Barge with 04 personnel on board towards the ICG ship.

The Gemini reached ICGS Amartya with 04 rescued persons at 08:00 PM. Thereafter, the rescue operation was terminated for the day view strong winds and heavy swell in the area.

ICGS Amartya has been maintaining its position in the area with continuous communication with Barge Ibis and intend to commence rescue operation by first light on 04 June 17. Coast Guard Hovercraft, ACV H-196 will also be deployed AM 04 June 2017 for rendering assistance and ICGS Rajdoot has been kept standby at short notice for sailing.

 

Barge hits Rocks in Sea, Coastguard Ship Rushed for Rescue

Mangaluru: A barge hit the rocks in the sea, at Mogaveerapattana Ullal, here on June 3.

The barge has been partially damaged and is fear of drowning. There are 27 crew in the barge.

A coastguard boat has rushed to the spot so has the ship Amartya for the rescue of the crew.
