Be Cautious while Reporting Issues Involving Children and Women – SP Laxman Nimbargi

Udupi: “While Journalists write reports involving children and women, they should be cautious to maintain their dignity”, said Laxman B Nimbargi Superintendent of Police Udupi District.

He was speaking after inaugurating the workshop for media persons and Police officials on Children’s Laws at the Dr V S Achayrya Hall, ZP Manipal here on January 24.

Before independence children and women did not have any freedom but after independence, there have been many changes in the laws. In the present situation once a child is born, every step of its growth the government is providing various schemes. Media should be extremely careful in reporting issues involving children and women as any insensitivity like revealing the identity of the children could permanently affect their lives. He pointed out several instances when certain media have revealed the details of children subjected to sexual abuse.

He added that the need for safeguarding the identity is also necessary for children accused of being in conflict with the law. “Because, they are also victims in a way since it is the fault of the society in pushing them to involve in unlawful activities,” he said.

He asked the journalists to always introspect whether the way they report any issue serves the best interest of the children.

Vanitha N Thorvi, member of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Senior public prosecutor Joythi Pramod Nayak, Dr Shubha, Actor Suchendra Prasad, deputy director women and child department, Sr Lilly Pushpa and others were present.
