Bengaluru Archbishop for religion-neutral citizenship offer

Bengaluru: The Metropolitan Archbishop of Bangalore, Peter Machado, on Thursday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and the Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to grant citizenship to illegal migrants on the merit of individual cases but not on religious basis.

“Religion should never be the criterion for citizenship of a country. There is a danger that there could be a polarisation of our peoples along religious lines, which is very harmful for the country,” said Machado reiterating the statement that the Metropolitan Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald, Cardinal Gracias made in December.

Referring to the Citizenship Amendment Act, Machado said it implies that any other group or community other than illegal Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian migrants will not be eligible for citizenship.

The CAA excludes persecuted Muslims of all kinds such as Shias, Ahmediyas and others from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan from the citizenship offer.

According to Machado, CAA caused misunderstanding among the Assamese people, leading to an uproar and violence which now is slowly spreading to other parts of India.

He also appealed to the citizens to maintain peace and harmony, shunning violent methods to fight for their cause.

The Archbishop called the government to strike a dialogue with people opposing CAA and come to an agreement about the way forward with justice, equity and fairness.

“By doing so, it can meet out justice to all the illegal migrants and thus promote equality among them. More so, it can also convince the citizens of the country that it upholds the sacredness of the Constitution and respects the rights of all the linguistic and religious minorities without any discrimination,” he said.

Empathising with the victims of religious discrimination, Machado said: “We also express our solidarity with those who have been discriminated on the basis of religion and assure them of our support an fellowship that justice may be granted to them and that all of us may live as one family as brothers sisters in this our motherland.”

He pledged that the Christian community will continue to work for the betterment of all the citizens without any discrimination and will continue to build the nation based on equality, justice and fairness.

  1. What if Pak pushes more of their majority people in the hope that the cut off date will be extended in the future? Do we have so much resource to take all of them. Their (Paks) main aim would be to change the demography of India. The respected Bishop should know how minorities in those countries have been pushed here. And the Hindus from Pak pushed here have been living miserably in those camps in India too as Government cannot do much as they are not citizens. Last year (December 2017) itself foreign vloggers who came to India have posted how poorly they are living here too but still those refugees think India is better! Those interested can search the youtube and watch!
You also have read last week how a young Christian couple were tortured: Young wife was stolen and married on the same day to another man forcibly.
Do we really need to help the persecuted one? If we allow everyone, Pak will force many of their poor people to flee to India so that they can ‘occupy’. Sir, that attitude of ‘conquering’ India hook or by crook has not yet abated. History has taught us enough lessons. If we don’t learn from that it would be bad. But what is worse is that leaders are misguiding people saying that it will affect citizens of one community while none of them will be affected. The opposition to CAA does not make sense at any level.

  2. BJP is gutting the Constitution with amendments. How many Indians are aware of amendment 126 to the Constitution which deprives Anglo Indians of political representation? No Anglo-Indian leader was consulted before the amendment was rammed through the legislature. BJP has contempt for the Indian Constitution.

    • Sir, latest amendment to the Indian constitution is 104th. If you meant 126th article, that is also not related to Anglo-Indian Community.
There is no amendment that deprives the representation of Anglo-Indians.
From what I know, article 334b deals with the special representation of the Anglo- Indian community in the parliament. During Independence Anglo-Indian community was about 5 lakhs. Two special seats by nomination were provided for Anglo-Indians. This was a special arrangement for 20 years which was later extended several times. The current extension by the 95th amendment ends in January 2020.
It is estimated that now there are less than 1.5 lakhs who identify themselves as Anglo-Indians mainly because of emigration and marrying Indian community partners.
The current extension ends in 2020, it was not extended. That only means they will not have special nomination seat. But they will have their representatives just like you and I have. I don’t see a single person of my micro-community in the Lokasbha. Does it mean I have no representative?
Truly people are making up reasons to be against the current government where none exists like the CAA though no citizen will lose their citizenship due to CAA
