BJP Yuva morcha to hold campaign seeking an ordinance on Kambala

Udupi: The Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha will organise a campaign on February 1 seeking an ordinance on Kambala said Raghupathi Bhat.

Speaking at a press meet held at the press club on January 23, he said that Kambala is a traditional annual buffalo race conducted in marshy fields in the coastal districts. There is a huge difference between Tamil Nadu’s ‘Jallikattu’ and the Kambala. When Jallikattu has got permission, Kambala should also be allowed, because no violence is involved in it. It is part of our cultural heritage, the Karnataka High Court had passed an interim order staying Kambala races in November last year on a case filed by PETA and the next hearing is on January 30.

Kambala in its traditional form is non-competitive with buffalo pairs made to race one after another in the paddy fields, which is considered a thanksgiving to the Gods for protecting the animals from diseases. Kambala is not only an entertaining event but has a historic and religious tradition behind it. On February 1st, a maximum number of Kambala lovers will gather at the Service bus stand and demand to withdraw the ban on Kambala. We also we request to the state government to pass an ordinance on Kamabala, he added.

Akshith Shetty Herga president of Nagara Yuva Morcha, Yashpal Suvarna president of Fish sellers association, Bhaskar Poojary and others were present at the press meet.
