Puttur: Safia, a resident of Karvelu near Uppinangady, lost Rs 55,000 to a woman pickpocket, a short while after she had borrowed that amount from a cooperative in town.

She is a member of a self-help group who had taken a loan from it. In order to replay the loan, she intended to pledge her gold ornaments in a cooperative in Uppinangady.

She had arrived with her mother-in-law Maimuna and had just collected Rs 55,000 after providing the gold jewellery as collateral at the cooperative. They got out of the premises and went to the bus-stand to return home.

As she was boarding a bus, a woman from behind is said to cut the pocket of her burqa with a pair of scissors, took the wads of notes and vanished in the crowd within a matter of seconds.

Those around made an attempt to trace the woman culprit but there was no use.

Maimuna has filed a case in the Uppinangady police station.
