CCB Police Arrest Inter-district Chain Snatcher, Recover Gold Ornaments

Mangaluru: The CCB police have succeeded in arresting an inter-district chain snatcher on October 9 who was involved in various chain snatching cases in the city as well as in Udupi district.

The arrested has been identified as Shakib alias Sabbu (25) from Katipalla, Suratkal.

According to the police, there were a number of chain snatching cases reported in the city. The CCB police collected all the necessary information about the chain snatchers and learnt that the accused were using a Ritz car for the crime and that they were in the Vamanjoor area.

Later, on getting reliable information about the accused the CCB police chased the Ritz car bearing registration number KA 19 MA 4807, in Vamanjoor and arrested Shakib and seized the car. During interrogation Shakib revealed that he along with the other accused were involved in chain snatching in the city as well as in Udupi District.

On August 16, at around 7:30 pm, when Yashoda was alone in the shop in Moodbidri, Shakib went to the shop and asked for ground nuts. When Yashoda was packing the ground nuts, Shakib snatched the gold chain Yashoda was wearing and fled from the spot. In this connection, a case was registered in the Moodbidri police station under section 392 IPC.

On April 5, in the Karkala station limits while Kariya Moolya was walking on the road Shakib snatched his gold chain and fled from the spot. A case was filed in the Karkala police station. On July 15, Shakib snatched two gold chains from 72-year-old Alice Cutinho’s neck while she was walking on the road. A case was also filed in the Shirva police station. Shakib was also involved in chain snatching cases in Karkala and Udupi district.

The accused along with his associates were involved in various chain snatching cases in DK and Udupi Districts. The police recovered 5 gold chains, one Karimani, 2 gold pendants (total 140 grams) worth Rs 4.15 lakh, Maruti Ritz car and 2 mobile phones all worth Rs 6.60 lakh from his possession.

The police are searching for other accused who are involved in the crime. Shakib has also been involved in attempt to murder and theft and 6 cases have been registered against him in the Suratkal, Bajpe and Mangaluru North police stations. The accused has been handed over to the Moodbidri police for further investigations.

Under the direction of Police commissioner T R Suresh, DCP crime and Traffic Uma Prashant the operation was carried out by the CCB Inspector Shantharam Kundar, PSI Shyam Sundar and team.
