London, Sep 9 (IANS) England football legend Bobby Charlton has congratulated Wayne Rooney after he became the country’s top goal-getter and believes that the Manchester United striker will continue to scale new heights.

The 29-year-old scored from a penalty on Tuesday night against Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier to skip past Charlton’s tally of 49 goals. England won the match 2-0.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at Manchester United I would like to say ‘Congratulations Wayne, this is a very proud moment for you and your family’,” Charlton was quoted as saying by the BBC on Tuesday.

“It is a record that I am sure you will hold for a long time. And it is clear to see that you will go on scoring for your club and country for a long time to come.”

Charlton said that he was disappointed that his record has been broken, but at the same time expressed his delight as it was Rooney who had bagged it.

“I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don’t hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record,” Charlton added.

Charlton is set to present Rooney with a special golden boot before a match against Estonia at Wembley Stadium in October.
