Mangaluru : Kodiyal aka Kudla aka Mangaluru is growing day by day. Many talents are born here, from singers to actors to dancers etc. The percentage of youngsters is very high here in this Coastal town aka Education Hub. Yes Kodiyal has many young singers who are making their families proud. Not only singers but also young actors are making their names in the Industry. Music is one entity which connects people all across the globe. Music has the ability which makes people forget the language and make us concentrate only on the melody. Among many cities in India, Mangaluru is one place where so many songs are composed throughout the year by upcoming and budding young singers. There are many new talented singers here in this City every year.

While looking at all the singers and bands that exist here, for Kodiyal, music is as essential an entity as probably the story as a whole. Some of the compositions by these new singers remain a patriotic favourite among cult music lovers irrespective of the age or era they belonged to. With the advent of not just online forums to showcase one’s musical inclinations, but also music festivals enjoying a moment on the commercial music scene apart from big music producers showing an interest in their music and underground musicians, it looks like new-age music might just break all social norms and conventions surrounding Education Town-Smart Mangaluru!

If ardent music aficionados and experts are to be believed, in the last decade or so, music and it’s many intricacies have almost transformed into a kaleidoscope of interesting genres, voices, rhythm and tunes, complete with experimental beats and fused instruments. Some of the most talented new musicians on the scene give us their two bits on the changing scenario. And one among them is Jaison J Sequeira, a 27 year old singer-songwriter hailing from Gurupura, Mangaluru, who started composing songs in his early teens when his parents bought him a keyboard and a guitar.

Having done his schooling at St Joseph’s HS -Bajpe; PUC at St Aloysius PU College-Mangaluru, Degree at Alva’s College, has completed his M Sc in Mangalore University, currently is a research scientist. Young Jaison has been singing his own songs in competitions conducted by his parish until 2011 when his songs were presented at Konkani Natak Sabha Inter-Parish singing competition, which fetch him prizes. Soon his songs reached a wider audience when 11 out of the 12 songs he sang during the TV reality show “Soad 4” were self-composed. This motivated him to produce and release his maiden music album ‘Ho Jeev’ in the year 2016. This album was nominated in the best music album category during the Global Konkani Music Awards -2017.

Jaison has composed close to hundred songs in different languages including Konkani, Kannada, Tulu, Hindi and English. His poems have been published in regional magazines and websites and recited on All India Radio. Apart from this, he has been frequently uploading poetry recitals on Facebook covering issues pertaining to politics and humanity. He put up his first musical show ‘Poilo Sur’ at Kalaangann-Mangaluru which received much appreciation for its uniqueness. His dream venture ‘Paypassion’, an online portal for all the young and old talents of our region, is in its testing phase.

And now, Jaison Sequeira is back with his fourth music concert “Ch’ovto Sur”. This unique home concert will be staged on 21st September (7 pm) at Eric Mathias Hall, St. Aloysius College-Mangaluru. He is among the very few Konkani composers presenting new songs in every live show. At ‘Ch’ovto Sur’, music lovers can listen to his youthful compositions rendered by himself and MTG winner Ms Velita Lobo. This event is in association with Konkani Sangha of St Aloysius College. About 25 students from this association will be a part of the harmony lead by Denzil Pereira of the Blue Angels Choir.

Well known drummer and percussionist Sachin Sequeira is in the team alongside young musicians. Russel Rodrigues will play the bass/electric/acoustic guitar, Alron Rodrigues on the Keys, Derick D’souza playing the rhythm guitar and Sharwin Fernandes on the lead. Reuben Machado, a young multi-instrumentalist from Mangaluru will be playing the Pan Flute, Flute, Saxophone and Harmonica. Soundhouse will be handling the lights and sounds during the event. All in all ‘Ch’ovto Sur’ is going to be a feast of original music for genuine music lovers.

Po’ylo Sur and Tisro Sur Unplugged took place at Kalangann, Mangalore and Dusro Sur was held at Puttur. The Sur Series by Jaison Sequeira and his team is known for uninfluenced music presentation. Paving a new path for original music in Konkani he says “Music in Konkani language is no different from any other music forms of the world in aspects structure and impact. My dream is to present my songs in their best form without having to compromise on anything. And that is possible through crowd funding. This has been the driving force of Sur series so far. So I urge everyone out there to contribute and help me realize the potential of this art”.

Original music production has been highly affected by rampant remakes and cover songs. Independent artists in India have become a dejected lot due to the monopoly of a few labels and various other reasons like smaller market, lack of regional platforms and higher cost of production. Jaison is one of those thousands of indie artists aspiring to make it big in the original music scene. He is a singer-songwriter from Gurpur and has a collection of about a hundred unreleased songs. Close to 40 songs have been presented in the Sur series so far. He has released his maiden music album ‘Ho Jeev’ in 2016. He is the recipient of ‘Yuva Kalapuraskar 2018’ for music at the decennial celebrations of Naman Ballok Jezu, a Konkani monthly and the ‘ICYM award of Excellence 2019’ from Most. Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bhisop of Mangalore Diocese.

Ch’ovto Sur is set to create a benchmark in Konkani music. With half the resources and double the efforts this ‘Music Only’ concert is the next big event to look out for!
