CM Siddaramaiah to lay foundation stone for district MCH on October 30

Udupi: The MOU signed between the Health Department, Government of Karnataka and businessman Dr B R Shetty for setting up a charity and a center for excellence hospital to promote better health care to the poor and the deprived without any commercial interest said Minister for Fisheries, Sports and Youth Affairs Pramod Madhwaraj. He was speaking at a press meet at his residence at Ammunje here on October 26.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will lay the foundation stone for the building on October 30, in a programme organized at the Town Hall, Udupi. BRS Health Research Institute Private Limited will be constructing a 200 bedded mother and child hospital within a period of one year. The existing government mother and child hospital in Udupi was constructed 60 years ago at the K M Marg Udupi donated by the great philanthropist of Udupi, Late Haji Abdulla Saheb.

Presently the said hospital has 70 beds and is operating in a dilapidated and very unhygienic condition. The number of poor patients is increasing day by day since Udupi has seen an increase of many folds in the local and immigrant population. The present hospital has become largely adequate to cater to the need of the poor people. There are no facilities available to treat the emergency or critical cases requiring Super Speciality Services. This hospital will provide all the medical services free of cost for all health assurance beneficiaries and BPL card holders. There will be no financial commitment from the government of Karnataka for this project.

The 400 bedded Centre for Excellence hospital shall be built, operated and managed by the service provider and the day to day management of the hospital will be with the service provider. The service for any mother and child hospital seeking emergency treatment is completely free of cost in the Center of Excellence hospital.

The center for excellence hospital shall follow the Government of Karnataka guidelines while treating Health Assurance beneficiaries and BPL card holders. A monitoring committee consisting of the deputy commissioner, district health officer, district surgeon and representatives from the service provider will monitor the progress of the project.

The two hundred bedded hospital will be named as Koosamma Shambu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Maternity Children’s Charity Hospital. The lease period of land for these two projects is 30 years, extended by mutual agreement of 60 years. The monitoring committee shall review the implementation of the MOU once every quarter. A third party evaluation will be conducted every three years with the consent of both the parties.

Once the Memorial Hospital is built, the Old MCH Hospital will be demolished. In its Place Dr B R Shetty has proposed to build a 400-bed capacity world class, a state of the art super specialty hospital to provide best of the medical services to the general public. Treatment in this super specialty hospital shall be chargeable as per reasonable rates fixed in a transparent manner. The revenue so generated will be utilized for running the MCH Unit.

The super specialty hospital shall treat all critical patients in the Mother and Child Hospital who are in need of super specialty services as per the norms of the Government of Karnataka’s Health and Family welfare Department.
