Cut the Plastic at Lakshadeepotsava

Dharmasthala: Plastic bags are vanishing quickly from the billing counters. Instead, one can see cloth bags in their place these days. We can witness this scenario at the week-long Lakshadeepotsava festival being held at the temple town Dharmasthala. Amidst the abuzz of activities is a cloth bag stall set up by the SDM Trust under the guidance of Dr Veerendra Heggede at the exhibition ground as part of the celebrations.

These cloth bags are being exclusively made by the IT students of SDM College and are sold at Rs 15 each. “There is no point in cribbing about health problems or global warming when one cannot stop using plastic. That’s why we have taken up this initiative seriously to spread awareness among the public to swap their plastic bags with cloth bags” said Vishnu Pradeep, staff at SDM Residential College. Just in front of Pradeep was a young girl busy transferring all the goods she had purchased from a plastic bag into the cloth bag which she bought from this shop.

While customers are carrying their own cloth bags, an umpteen number of people are yet to get adjusted to the ‘No-Plastic’ trend. “We are delighted with the response, as there are few people showing interest in our stall. Also, by visiting our stall people can get information about the different courses offered by the SDM Educational Society” said Ganesh V, staff at SDM CBSC.

These bags have become popular as a “Bag for Life” as it is bio-degradable and eco-friendly. Hope we join hands to see plastic-free earth in the upcoming days.
