Dasara Holidays for Students may be Cut to Compensate Rain Holidays

Mangaluru: Parents are advised not to make plans now for a long vacation during the forthcoming Dasara Holidays, since the Department of Public Instruction is planning on cutting down nearly 15 Dasara Holidays, in order to make up for the rain holidays ordered by the District Administration. Until now school/PUC students have already received eight holidays due to incessant rains in the district.

This year the Dasara holidays start from October 7 to October 21, and there are very good chances these holidays could be cut short. Speaking to Team Mangalorean, DDPI Y Shivaramaiah said, ” Since the monsoon is not over yet, chances are that many more holidays could be given to the School/PUC students depending on the weather conditions. Therefore right now, we have decided to slash 15 days out of the Dasara holidays, in order to compensate with the rain holidays given so far. There could be extended classes on Saturdays, if needed. And we have full rights as per the rules to shorten the holidays when such situation arise. In a academic year every school operates 240 days, out of which they have to work compulsory for 220 days”.

It is learnt that if school/college normal working days get affected by unrelated holidays due to Bandh, or any other reasons, then the DDPI has the full rights to cancel holidays {like Dasara etc} in order to balance normal working days. Apart from that, every school has been sanctioned four holidays per year, which they can utilize whenever they need, for a local event or a feast. In the meantime, it is also learnt that department of PU education is also considering to slash down Dasara holidays to balance rain holidays. Special classes also could be added to compensate weather related holidays or make Dasara vacation short. Decision is yet to be taken in this regard, as per department of pre-university education.

So students who were happy to get all these rain holidays so far, have to sacrifice portion of their Dasara holidays come October!
